Newcastle are hoping to move into the top half when they take on a Chelsea side too vulnerable mount a sustained title charge despite occupying the top four.

Defending EFL Cup winners Newcastle moved into the semi-finals of the competition once again by beating Fulham 2-1 in midweek. However, they have remained inconsistent in the top-flight, losing 1-0 to Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne Derby at the Stadium of Light last weekend.

Chelsea inched towards the title race in the Premier League but have since drifted back to fourth - eight adrift of Arsenal - albeit they did bounce back with a 2-0 win against Everton at Stamford Bridge before a 3-1 win against League One side Cardiff City in the cup.

Newcastle United vs. Chelsea Prediction: Who Will Win?

Eddie Howe has come in for criticism this season but at their best Newcastle remain one of the better sides in the Premier League, especially with their habit of getting themselves up for the big occasion.

Chelsea head to Tyneside looking to dampen the intensity of the St James’ Park crowd. We're backing Newcastle to bag a big win at home to ease the pressure on Howe.

Score Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea (11/1 with Paddy Power)

Newcastle vs. Chelsea Betting Tips

There will have to be changes in the final third for Newcastle due to the underwhelming performances from Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga.

Harvey Barnes should come into the XI, particularly as Jacob Murphy seems an ideal solution for the full-back crisis. Even in a deeper role, siding with Murphy (3.88 xGI) to contribute with a goal or an assist (11/8 with Sky Bet) is a good bet.

Newcastle vs. Chelsea Team News

Newcastle Team News

  • With Jacob Murphy coming into the side on the right-hand side of the defence, it is likely Nick Woltemade keeps his place up-front with Anthony Gordon out to the left and Harvey Barnes on the right.
  • The hosts will be without England international defender Dan Burn, as he suffered a punctured lung in the clash in a collision against Nordi Mukiele.
  • Newcastle are dealing with plenty of injury issues for this one at the back, too, with Sven Botman sidelined alongside Kieran Trippier, and now Lewis Hall has picked up a hamstring injury. Tino Livramento also had to come off against Fulham.

Chelsea Team News

  • Moises Caicedo returned from suspension in midweek and the Ecuador international is expected to head straight into the Chelsea lineup for this one.
  • Enzo Maresca has confirmed that young Brazil international attacker Estevao is now set to be sidelined for at least this game due to a small muscular problem.
  • The Blues have a few other confirmed, longer term absentees such as defender Levi Colwill, midfielder Dario Essugo and striker Liam Delap.
