Bayern Munich have struggled throughout the summer transfer window in getting deals over the line as they have missed out on several targets.

The Bavarians have allowed as many as 11 players to leave the club this summer and have only signed three in Tom Bischof, Jonathan Tah and Luis Diaz with the latter being the biggest signing of the summer in terms of transfer fee.

On Sunday, Bayern Munich lifted the DFL Supercup after beating Stuttgart 2-1 in a close encounter with Harry Kane and Diaz getting into the scoresheet for the German champions.

Following the game, Kane didn't mince his words about transfers as he highlighted that this Bayern team is one of the smallest squads that he has been a part of.

"It's probably one of the smallest squads I've ever played in," Kane stated. "There's still time until the transfer window closes and decisions could be made by Max, Christoph, and the coach. We have some young players who have done very well in preseason. We're a bit thin, but that's not in the players' control."

At this point, Vincent Kompany have only 24 first team players with several players out with injuries and a couple have been promoted from the academy.

Bayern Munich are yet to replace Thomas Muller, who has moved to MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps after 25 years of association.

The Bavarians are trying to secure the signature of Nick Woltemade, whom they see as a long-term Muller replacement, but Stuttgart aren't ready to let go of one of the prized possessions this summer.

They also need to replace Kingsley Coman, who has moved to Saudi Arabia, joining Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr.

Bayern are already working on a deal to sign Christopher Nkunku from Chelsea as they feel that the 27-year-old could be a great player in their system due to his versatility to play in multiple positions.

What did Lothar Matthaus say about Kane's comments?

Lothar Matthaus doesn't agree with the English striker's transfer plea as he believes that the club has done enough to fill spots this summer and with key players returning from injury Bayern could be a real force during the business end of the season.

@FCBayernES

"I didn’t quite understand Harry Kane’s comments that this year’s Bayern squad is one of the smallest he’s ever played in," Matthaus wrote in his Sky Sports column.

"Diaz and Tah are absolute reinforcements, and they’ve also added a really good player in central midfield in Tom Bischof. Furthermore, Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito will return from their injuries at the latest when the title is at stake."

Despite Matthaus' arguments of youth development and key players returning from injuries later in the campaign, Bayern Munich are just a couple of injuries away from getting derailed in the 2025/26 season.

While Matthaus considers the Bavarians as one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season but with only 24 senior players available at his disposal, this is a tall ask from Kompany to fulfill.
