Having reached the final of Euro 2020 and the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, England will hope to shine more in the spotlight of their third major tournament under Gareth Southgate than they have during a wretched recent run of six matches without a win.

Victory over Iran would mark the Three Lions' first victory outside of England in more than a year, having scored once in three games on their travels during that time.

At 20th in the world, Iran are ranked 16 places higher than Hungary, whose double victory over England in June included a 4-0 win at Molineux, when the mood among English fans turned mutinous.

Here's how you can watch all the action in the major global territories as the Qatar 2022 Group B action gets underway.

England vs. Iran lineups

Fullback Kyle Walker (groin) has been out since October 2 and midfielder Kalvin Phillips (shoulder) has scarcely featured for Manchester City this season after joining from Leeds United during the summer, but both players were named in the England squad and have trained.

Playmaker James Maddison was a relatively surprising inclusion in the final 26 players, only to limp out of Leicester's final game before the Premier League paused for the World Cup. Maddison has played a limited part in training sessions as England take no chances with his recovery, making him unlikely to feature in their first match.

England probable (3-4-2-1, right to left): 1. Pickford (GK) – 5. Stones, 15. Dier, 7. Maguire – 3. Shaw, 4. Rice, 22. Bellingham, 12. Trippier – 10. Sterling, 20. Foden – 9. Kane

Bayer Leverkusen's Sardar Azmoun is a doubt for Iran, although the highest-ranked Asian country in football will be desperate for the prolific forward, who has scored 40 goals for his country, to fire their bid to reach the knockout stage for the first time.

Azmoun has been missing for his Bundesliga club since the end of September with a calf tear. The 65-cap international scored in Iran's final World Cup qualifier — a 2-0 win over Lebanon — and their 1-1 draw with Senegal in September, but was not in their matchday squad for their 1-0 victory against Nicaragua on November 10.

Iran probable (4-1-3-2, right to left): 1. Beiranvand (GK) – 2. Moharrami, 13. Kanaani, 19. Hosseini, 3. Hajsafi – 6. Ezatolahi – 17. Gholizadeh, 21. Nourollahi, 7. Jahanbakhsh – 9. Taremi, 10. Ansarifard

England vs. Iran odds, prediction

England are heavily fancied to start with a win according to the bookmarkers, who predict a low-scoring victory against an Iran side who have only been part of a game containing more than two goals in one of their last eight fixtures.

Four of England's seven goals that did not come from the penalty spot were scored by defenders during the 2018 World Cup, so a bet on their backline to score appeals.

  • Pick: John Stones to score (11/1)
  • Prediction: England 2-0 Iran
