FC Barcelona has finalised one of the most crucial contract renewals of the season, with midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong set to sign a bumper new deal that will tie him to the club until June 2029.

The formal signing ceremony, which club president Joan Laporta will attend, is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, October 15, bringing an end to months of speculation over the Dutch international’s future.

The renewal is a major coup for Barcelona and manager Hansi Flick, who views De Jong as a pivotal figure in the team's double pivot alongside Pedri.

This commitment is viewed as a significant step in securing the core of the club’s future for years to come.

The details of the €500 million agreement

The new deal extends the 28-year-old midfielder’s stay by three additional years and includes a staggering €500 million release clause.

This substantial figure, which is up from his previous €400 million clause, firmly places De Jong in the category of untouchable assets, alongside La Masia graduates like Pedri and Lamine Yamal.

In a necessary move to adhere to the club's new salary structure, De Jong has also agreed to a salary adjustment, or pay cut, for the extension period.

The compromise underscores the Dutch star's strong desire to remain at Camp Nou, a desire he publicly affirmed while on international duty by stating, "I hope to stay at Barcelona until the end of my career. This is the place I wanted to be as a child."

Securing the future for Flick’s midfield

The renewal of Frenkie de Jong is a major victory for Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, as the club continues its strategy of securing key assets.

De Jong's previous contract was set to expire in 2026, meaning he would have been free to negotiate with other clubs in January.

His exceptional performances for Hansi Flick have made him invaluable, often dictating the tempo of the game with his composure and vision.

With De Jong's future now secured, Barcelona can shift focus to other players whose contracts are also nearing expiry.

The extension ensures stability in the midfield and removes any lingering uncertainty that could have overshadowed the club’s ambitions this season.
