A former Newcastle United player has criticised Alexander Isak over the player's actions and behaviour this summer.

Isak is intent on leaving Newcastle for Liverpool in this transfer window, with the Merseyside club having a bid rumoured to be worth £110m rejected for the striker a few weeks ago.

The Swedish international is currently spending time away from the Newcastle first-team as he refuses to train or play for the club ever again.

Newcastle remain bullish about keeping the 25-year-old at the club unless a bid of around £150m is submitted and if Eddie Howe's side can secure a replacement.

Earlier in the summer, Isak was training alone at the facilities of his old club, Real Sociedad. This was to maintain his fitness, as a small thigh issue caused him to not go on Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia.

The actions of the player this summer has angered Newcastle fans, who are incensed at the player's lack of loyalty to their club and the way he has gone about the whole situation.

Isak hit out at his current club earlier this week on social media, claiming that promises had been broken and that Newcastle were informed of his desire to leave a while ago.

This caused Newcastle to immediately strike back with their own response, which boldly declared that at no point was it officially communicated to Isak that could leave the club in this window.

Ex-Newcastle player's reaction to the latest events in the Isak saga

Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, who played for the club between 1995-1998, is not pleased with Isak's recent social media post after how the player has handled matters this summer.

"You don't go back to your former club to train, miss pre-season, stay away from the football club, then in mid-August, claim a moral high ground. You've given that up", said Hislop on Wednesday's edition of ESPN FC.

"If that's what you're doing, (refusing to be part of the team), do it, and own it. You don't get to turn around six weeks into it and claim some kind of moral high ground here," he continued.

Hislop then suggested that none of Isak's actions are beneficial to the current situation.

"I do not understand Isak's position, that ridiculous statement on social media. I do not understand who's advising him because I can't think of how he could have gotten this more wrong. It's an absolute farce."

However, the ex-Newcastle shot-stopper praised his old club for the way they have handled the long-running saga.

"Credit to Eddie Howe and the club for at least trying to find a solution to this. He's got three years left on his contract (Isak). I think it's important for Newcastle for the long-term good of the club to not be bullied."
