Why Man Utd's new signing rejected Premier League rivals despite better transfer offer image

Manchester United’s ability to pull players ahead of their Premier League rivals has again been proven.

This time, it came in the form of Senne Lammens, the 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper who arrived from Royal Antwerp in a £18.2m [$24.2m] deal with £3.5m [$4.6m] in add-ons.

He has signed a contract through 2030 and joined the club after traveling to Manchester on September 1.

According to the Athletic, The position was not a priority unless Andre Onana departed.

But the frailties in early matches has led to Red Devils looking in the Belgian League.

Amorim has been left deeply unimpressed by both Altay Bayındır and Andre Onana through the opening four games of the 2025/26 season.

Bayındır has failed to register a single clean sheet across his three Premier League appearances, while Onana was between the posts for the embarrassing EFL Cup loss against Grimsby Town where United exited on penalties after a 2-2 draw against League Two opposition.

According to MailOnline, Aston Villa agreed a higher fee with Antwerp than United’s £18.2m plus £3.5m package.

However, Lammens turned down Villa’s offer and insisted on a move to Old Trafford. The Belgian became Antwerp’s first-choice last season, registering 44 appearances and guiding the club into the Conference League.

United’s transfer power again proved decisive, echoing earlier summer business when Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko favored Old Trafford.

Former Brentford star chose Man United over Tottenham and Newcastle United.

While, Sesko rejected Newcastle despite their reported £78m [$104m] proposal, instead choosing United’s lower £73.7m [$98m] offer to RB Leipzig.

The goalkeeper had interest from Villa and was also monitored by Porto, who targeted Diogo Costa replacements.

Yet his preference was shaped by personal ambition and early memories of United dominating European football.

What did Senne Lammens say after Joining Man United?

In his first interview with Man United, Lammens described the move as a lifelong dream and recalled his childhood memories

“This is my dream move,” he told MUTV.

“When I was five, United was at the height of football and you keep in your memory how big Manchester United is, so, when I heard they were interested, it was like a childhood dream."

“I remember being a kid, Manchester United winning the Champions League and winning the league, and also [I want] to help the team get to a level that you can compete for a title again and to play Champions League again."

"That’s also one of my biggest points, that I want to grow with the team and go up to the heights that used to be Manchester United."

“It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and the Premier League is the biggest competition in the world.
