Wayne Rooney has never been one to mince words, especially when it comes to Liverpool.
Ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Anfield this weekend, the former Red Devils captain shared his thoughts on what Ruben Amorim should do to survive the cauldron — and maybe even cause an upset.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the United legend made it clear he would gladly take a point from the game.
But as always, Rooney added his trademark edge, suggesting Amorim should attack rather than park the bus. “There’s a chance we [Man United] can win. It will be very difficult, it always is, to go to Anfield and win,” he said.
“I hope he sticks with the two forwards playing closer to each other like the last game and goes for it. I think if you sit back against Liverpool, they’ll kill you.”
United travel to Merseyside in better spirits after their 2-0 victory over Sunderland, while Liverpool are licking their wounds following three straight defeats — including a stoppage-time heartbreak against Chelsea.

Rooney believes that slump could actually fire up Arne Slot’s men.
“Just with Liverpool losing three games, I think that pride kicks in and the fans will know, the fans are not stupid, they know and will get behind the team and push them,” Rooney said.

The former England striker also warned that the pressure is now firmly on Liverpool. “If Liverpool lose four games in a row and they lose to Man United at Anfield, I think the pressure is definitely on Liverpool for this game,” he explained.
Rooney praised Amorim’s recent tactical tweaks, especially pairing two forwards up front. But he hinted that United’s best hope lies in playing brave football rather than defensive.
“If United come away with a point, I think that would be huge,” he said, acknowledging the difficulty of getting any result at Anfield.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are searching for a spark to reignite their season after a rocky spell. Rooney believes their early success may have masked underlying chemistry issues, saying,
“When you bring so many new players in, they’ve all probably got a bit of an ego… I think the last three games has shown everyone and exposed those first five games.”
Whether Amorim listens to Rooney’s advice remains to be seen. But with United eager to prove themselves and Liverpool desperate for a response, Sunday’s clash could be anything but dull.
And as Rooney knows all too well — form means nothing when it’s Liverpool vs. Manchester United.
