Sir Gareth Southgate rebuilt his managerial career with England, and could be in line to take over at Manchester United

Southgate was thrust into management at Middlesbrough with no break from his playing career at the Riverside.

He suffered relegation from the Premier League with Boro before working with the England U21s. Southgate was then chosen to manage the England senior side following Sam Allardyce's short tenure in the role.

His England side surprised at the 2018 World Cup, making it to the semi-finals. He was linked with United at the time, but ended up staying with the Three Lions.

Southgate would take England to two European Championship finals. They lost agonisingly on penalties to Italy at Euro 2020, and following the 2024 final defeat to Spain, Southgate stepped down from the role.

Would Sir Gareth Southgate now be a good fit for Manchester United?

Ruben Amorim's time at United could be numbered following their 3-1 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League.

Amorim had just defeated Chelsea, which could have been a turning point in their season, but the Red Devils have again failed to win back-to-back games.

According to talkSPORT, "Southgate is an option for Manchester United if they decide to sack Ruben Amorim."

Southgate has been out of club football since 2009, but worked with many of United's players with England.

Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Mason Mount all featured prominently for England under Southgate. Even Kobbie Mainoo, who is out of favour at United, was key during the Three Lions' run to the final of Euro 2024.

Southgate may even be able to reintegrate Marcus Rashford into the fold if Barcelona does not sign him permanently.

Graham Potter, who has just been sacked by West Ham United, has also been linked with taking over at Old Trafford. However, Potter's stock is low following his recent failings in East London and Chelsea before that.
