Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has finally broken the silence on the club’s decision to block midfielder Kobbie Mainoo’s transfer on deadline day.
Mainoo had not featured much in United’s opening Premier League fixtures, though he did start in their embarrassing EFL Cup loss to fourth-tier side Grimsby Town last month.
Still, it became clear that the England international was seeking a move away from Old Trafford in search of more playing time to strengthen his case for a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup.
He reportedly asked the club to sanction a loan or transfer, with a move to Napoli reportedly very close to being agreed on deadline day, until United’s hierarchy shut the door.
Mainoo started 12 of 27 Premier League games last season under Amorim, though he, like the rest of the squad, often flattered to deceive.

He later found himself in an unusual supersub role towards the end of the season, spurring his desire to move away from Manchester.
The 20-year-old Stockport-born midfielder has been a United fan since he was a child and has been a part of the club’s academy since he was nine years old.
What’s Amorim’s stance on Mainoo now?
Amorim has now shed light on the club’s decision to keep hold of Mainoo, while also clarifying what he expects from the highly-rated youngster.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s Manchester derby, Amorim clarified matters.

“I didn't have a conversation with him before the window closed because I didn't want Kobbie Mainoo thinking that I was having a conversation with him just to hold on to him,” the United boss said.
“I spoke with him this week. I believe in him a lot. He is a top player.
“But some of you think that Kobbie is already done [a complete player]. I think he can do so much better.
“For some guys [talent] is enough, but for him it is not. Maybe it's not fair, but I think I'm helping Kobbie and that's it.”
Mainoo has been told that he is competing with United skipper Bruno Fernandes for a midfield role, but Amorim has now made it clear that the youngster will have to raise his level if he is to earn a more regular role this season.
United take on Manchester City on Sunday (September 14) at the Etihad Stadium, where Mainoo could be given another brief chance to impress.
