Manchester United have suffered a fresh blow as one of the team's defensive assets has picked up an injury while away on international duty.

On Thursday (September 4), Diogo Dalot withdrew from Portugal's squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Armenia and Hungary due to going down in training.

According to the Portuguese Football Federation, the 26-year-old is suffering from "muscle discomfort", and he will make his way back to Manchester instead of remaining with Roberto Martinez's side.

After coming off the bench in United's opening two Premier League games, Dalot started for Ruben Amorim's side in their dramatic 3-2 win over Burnley last Saturday (August 30).

Displacing Patrick Dorgu at left-wing back, Dalot made an impact in the game at Old Trafford as he provided the assist for Bryan Mbeumo's second half-goal.

Amorim will be hoping the defender's injury is not too serious, and that he is available for The Red Devils' first fixture after the international break, away at local rivals Manchester City on September 14.

Injury list slowly piles up for United

Dalot is the latest United player to pick up an injury in the past week, as Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount both hobbled off during the game against Burnley having started the match.

Cunha had to withdraw from Brazil's latest squad as a result and will miss his country's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia.

Mount's injury will be a concern to Amorim as the midfielder has struggled to stay fit since joining the club in 2023.

The English midfielder appeared to have put his injury woes behind him as he looked promising in the early weeks of the season, linking up well with United's attackers against both Arsenal and Fulham, respectively.

The next few weeks will be crucial for United, as after playing City, a home match against Chelsea on September 20 awaits. Hence, Amorim will not want to be without the freshly injured players for lengthy periods.
