Luke Shaw has declared that Manchester United’s aim for the upcoming season is to win the Premier League title.

United limped to their worst-ever Premier League finish last season, ending a dismal campaign in 15th place, while also losing out to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

Ruben Amorim struggled to steady the ship after taking over from Erik ten Hag in November, and even the most hopeful of United fans would find it hard to believe that their side can challenge for the crown.

Still, Shaw remains optimistic, believing that his side have the necessary tools and belief to become champions of England.

“The aim has to be winning the Premier League,” the left-back said.

He acknowledged the absurdity of his claim immediately after, adding: “I know people will be questioning me for saying it after last season, but it has to be that and it's not just me that thinks that.

“I'm sure the whole team, if you ask them, all have the same aims, even the manager. I'm sure he wouldn't say it in the press, but we have to have the same beliefs and ambitions.”

Shaw joins several teammates – including Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes – in publicly backing Amorim’s vision in recent days.

So, what’s changed at United?

According to Shaw, United’s squad has the potential to challenge for the title, but he believes the key lies in finding cohesion.

“I think our squad, we have such a good squad, it's just about unlocking that potential we have and finding ways of all being able to play together and release the potential that I know our team has.

“I see it in training day in, day out, the quality we have. We do it in training but it's time we show it in the games too.”

United have added Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to their ranks this summer, with rumours indicating that they are not done in the market as yet, and Shaw believes these signings will bring a much-needed energy to the group.

“It's always nice to have new faces and I know they'll be brilliant signings,” Shaw said. “They will add a lot to the group not just on the pitch but off the pitch too. They're very lively characters.”

The 30-year-old also pointed to a shift in the squad’s overall atmosphere heading into the new season.

“I already feel a different vibe in the group from the ones that were here last season, it feels more energised.

“We know how bad last season was but I think everyone's put that behind us now and is focussed on making the environment as happy and positive as it can be.”

Manchester United kick-start their Premier League campaign at Old Trafford on August 17, hosting last season’s runners-up Arsenal.
