Julian Alvarez had great success with Manchester City, winning the Premier League twice and the Champions League. However, he often played second fiddle to Erling Haaland.

Alvarez then joined Atletico Madrid to ensure he got regular game time, but he has not added to his trophy cabinet since joining the La Liga side.

Despite scoring 29 goals, with eight assists in 57 games in all competitions last season, Atletico did not claim any silverware.

It is always going to be difficult for Atletico to compete domestically when they are up against the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona

Atletico have not had the best of starts to this season, where they are 10th in La Liga. Alvarez has also had a disappointing start to the campaign.

The Argentine has scored just once, with one assist in five league games. He also suffered a knee injury in their win over Villarreal, which meant he missed out on facing Liverpool in the Champions League.

It would have been interesting to see Alvarez play at Anfield, as he is now being linked with the Reds.

Fichajes has reported (translated from Spanish), "Barcelona is one of the teams that has shown the most interest in Julián Álvarez.

"At Camp Nou, they dream of having his goal-scoring instinct and ability to decide matches. However, the club that appears best positioned is Liverpool."

Alvarez is predominantly a center-forward, and he left City as he did not start ahead of Haaland.

It would be difficult for him to play in his favoured position at Liverpool, as they now have Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

The Argentina international would therefore likely have to play on either wing, which he can do.

Alvarez could be Liverpool's long-term successor to Mohamed Salah. However, he could replace another legend at Barcelona.

Robert Lewandowski is now 37, and his contract with Barca expires next summer. Alvarez could be the perfect fit for replacing Lewandowski, and could play in his preferred position as a striker for the club.
