Liverpool have hijacked Arsenal’s move for teenage sensation Will Wright, landing the Salford City striker in a dramatic last-minute swoop.

The 17-year-old had reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Arsenal after weeks of talks, but Liverpool moved quickly to raise their offer and secure personal terms—convincing Wright to join their academy instead.

Wright scored over 50 goals across Salford’s youth and B teams last season, catching the eye of several top-flight clubs.

Arsenal believed they had the deal wrapped up earlier this month, offering a package in the region of £250,000 plus add-ons. But sources suggest personal terms proved a sticking point, and Liverpool used the delay to pounce.

Italian sports writer, Fabrizio Romano, confirmed the deal on Wednesday night, adding his trademark “here we go” to the announcement.

Wright has signed a deal with Liverpool running until June 2028 and will join up with the club’s U21s.

The striker, who stands out for his athleticism and movement in the box, is seen by Liverpool as a long-term investment—one they were prepared to push through despite Arsenal’s early lead.

The move is also thought to suit Wright better geographically, with Liverpool’s Kirkby academy far closer to home than Arsenal’s Hale End base.

For Arsenal, it’s a frustrating miss in a summer where they’ve targeted young domestic talent. For Liverpool, it’s a quiet but significant coup—and another sign of their intent to stay one step ahead in the talent race.
