Liverpool star admits 'I'm exhausted' after World Cup qualifier rescue act image

Arne Slot faces several squad selection calls as his Liverpool squad return from international duty.

The Dutch coach has received mostly positive news ahead of the domestic season restart with Ibrahima Konate's injury the only real setback.

Konate joined the France squad carrying a slight injury and Didier Deschamps did not use him off the bench in Les Bleus' 3-1 home win over Azerbaijan.

He was then allowed to fly back to the UK, ahead of France's 2-2 draw in Iceland, after the injury returned in training n Deschamps' camp.

The 26-year-old will be assessed by the Liverpool medical staff in the coming days with an eye on hosting arch rivals Manchester United on October 19.

Alexis Mac Allister faces a long flight back from Argentina duty, but he is not the only midfield concern for Slot, after Dominik Szoboszla kept Hungary's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes alive.

Szoboszlai captained Hungary across two full games in September and repeated that in the October window.

Szoboszlai admits exhaustion after Hungary's World Cup rescue

After a 2-0 home win over Armenia, Hungary needed their skipper to salvage a result in Lisbon, as he poked home a late equaliser against Cristiano Ronaldo & Co.

The 24-year-old was visibly exhausted in the closing stages, as he stayed in the Portugal box after a corner to snatch a point at the Estádio José Alvalade.

"I'm so proud of the team. We fought all the way. We started well, there was a slight dip in our game, but then we got ourselves together," he told Nemzeti Sport.

"My goal came from the fact I was so tired that I couldn’t go for the short [corner] anymore. I hoped it would come back in after the long one. I was confident until the end we'd manage to equalise."

Slot will now be forced into a call on Szoboszlai's readiness to start such a demanding game as Hungary's World Cup spot remains on the cards.

Portugal are on 10 points after four games, as victory against Hungary would have sealed their place at the tournament next summer, with Hungary on five and the Republic of Ireland on four after the latter's key win over Armenia.
