Darwin Nunez confirms transfer intention as Liverpool reject fresh bid image

Liverpool boss Arne Slot is aiming to offload striker Darwin Nunez before the start of the 2025/26 season.

Slot is looking to reshape his squad ahead of the return to preseason training in mid-July with a deal already agreed to bring in Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.

Dutch star Frimpong slots in as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back following his switch to Real Madrid.

The Reds hierarchy are still working on a deal to bring in Frimpong's former Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz as part of a club record transfer deal alongside ongoing interest in Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez.

However, as part of Slot's attempts to balance the books at Anfield, major sales are planned with Nunez top of the exit list.

Harvey Elliott has also indicated his interest in moving on in search of regular match action but Nunez could bring in a sizeable fee.

Darwin Nunez's Liverpool contract, sale price, transfer latest

Uruguay international Nunez remains Liverpool's current record transfer after the £72m [$98m] they paid Benfica for him in 2022.

The 25-year-old is under contract at Anfield until 2028, and his transfer value remains high, despite a 2024/25 season tally of just five Premier League goals.

As per reports from the Daily Mirror, Liverpool received an offer from Saudi Pro League [SPL] side Al Hilal just before the June 10 FIFA Club World Cup deadline, but it was rejected.

The Reds also turned down a £60m [$81.5m] offer from Al Nassr in January, as Slot wanted to give Nunez a final chance to prove himself, but a call has now been made.

Slot wants to sell - in part to fund the Wirtz deal - but also to ensure Nunez's value does not drop in the months ahead.

Darwin Nunez of Liverpool

The main stumbling block appears to be a destination, with Saudi clubs prepared to pay the above figure once again, but Nunez has closed the door on a move to the Middle East.

A departure from Liverpool will only be to join another European club with former side Benfica and Atletico Madrid both rumoured to be interested.

Neither club will pay as much as an offer from the SPL, but Nunez's contract puts him in a strong position to negotiate, and Liverpool may be forced to sell for less than 50% of their original outlay to secure an exit package.
