Andy Robertson breaks silence on rejecting Atletico Madrid amid Liverpool uncertainty image

Andy Robertson has spoken openly about why he chose to stay at Liverpool despite interest from Atletico Madrid.

The Scotland captain admitted it was a tough call, but one he felt he had to make with both his heart and his head.

For the first time since arriving at Anfield in 2017, Robertson is no longer the clear first-choice at left back.

New signing Milos Kerkez has been handed the starting role by Arne Slot, leaving Robertson on the bench for much of the season so far.

That led to strong speculation over his future, with reports linking him to a move to Spain in the summer.

But speaking to BBC Sport Scotland, the 31-year-old explained: “We had options and we just worked through it as a family. Everything boiled down to that my heart was still in Liverpool and we wanted to stay.”

Robertson’s decision to turn down Atletico came with its own reward. He was named Liverpool vice-captain, a role that ensures his influence in the squad remains strong even if his playing time is reduced.

“We’re very settled there and we’re at one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said.

Still, the defender knows the adjustment has been challenging. He admitted he has “missed the feeling of playing games” and described the transition as difficult after being a regular starter for so many years.

Yet he remains optimistic, pointing out that the season is long and there will be plenty of opportunities.

For Liverpool fans, the message is clear: Robertson is not ready to walk alone. His loyalty means he will fight for his place, even if he has to do it from the sidelines for now.
