Crystal Palace chairman admits Guehi's transfer to Liverpool was called off before deadline image

Marc Guehi's £35 million transfer to Liverpool falling through has been one of the most talked about topics since September 1, but it wasn't a last minute decision.

According to Sky Sports News, Crystal Palace chairman Mark Parish says the captain's move to the reigning champions was "called off" at 4pm on Deadline Day, after the club failed to find a replacement.

Guehi had captained and scored for his side on August 31 in their 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.

After the game, manager Oliver Glasner made it clear the Eagles could not afford to lose Guehi and had no intention of letting him go the next day.

With the centre-back in the final year of his contract and talk of not wanting to lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season, Crystal Palace accepted Liverpool's offer of £35 million early on Deadline Day.

But as the clocked ticked down, Palace backed out.

Parish confirmed the decision was made at 4pm on September 1. He then said the reasons behind the decision were relayed to Guehi and his family face-to-face after the 7pm deadline.

It is reported that Glasner's insistence on keeping the captain paid a big part in the club's decision.

A replacement looked to have been found during Deadline Day, when Brighton's Igor Julio conducted a medical with the club but he ultimately decided on a move to West Ham.

Guehi will now have the option to explore options with foreign clubs during the January transfer window.

If nothing materialises then, he could be offered a new deal with Palace or leave the South London club as a free agent next summer.
