Since his move to Chelsea from Manchester City a few years back, Cole Palmer has undoubtedly established himself as the Blues’ talisman.

Chelsea are a much poorer side when Palmer is not on the pitch. For instance, now that Palmer is out with a groin injury, the Blues have been struggling to create a put-away their chances in his absence.

However, Palmer is an ambitious player who dreams of winning the Ballon d’Or someday and according to former Chelsea star Gus Poyet, the Englishman might have to leave Chelsea to fulfil his dream.

According to Poyet, Palmer will not be able to win the Ballon d’Or at Chelsea and will need to leave Stamford Bridge and join one of Europe’s heavyweight clubs to win the coveted award.

Poyet’s claims may carry some weight, given that a player needs to be winning titles to stand a chance of winning the Ballon d’Or.

Though Palmer’s exploits led Chelsea to the Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League, he will need to win something substantial to stand a chance of winning the Ballon d’Or.

Why Gus Poyet believes Cole Palmer might need to leave Chelsea

When asked whether Palmer will need to join a club like Real Madrid to win the Ballon d’Or, ex-Blues star Poyet told GOAL, “100 per cent, no doubt. For me, [Jude] Bellingham, when I saw him at Dortmund, I liked him a lot. Then his first season at Real Madrid, I love him. Why? Because he was at Real Madrid doing what he was doing, simple.

“And I thought, maybe he is the Ballon d’Or. It was a big opportunity because he was amazing his first season in Spain – he was tremendous, another dimension, another level, and that helps.”

Cole Palmer of Chelsea

Going by what Poyet is saying, Palmer will have to work twice as hard to win the Ballon d’Or at Chelsea.

He will have to ensure that Chelsea are consistently fighting for and winning notable trophies like the Premier League and the Champions League.

But the Englishman is young and has time on his side, with the right kind of support from his teammates and coaches; nothing should be impossible for Palmer.
