Chelsea’s January transfer plans revealed as Enzo Maresca's request set to be denied image

With seven Premier League matchdays now completed, most clubs have a clearer picture of how their squads have taken shape following the summer transfer window.

Many, including Chelsea, would already be casting an eye toward January, assessing where improvements might be needed ahead of what promises to be a demanding second half of the campaign.

The Blues were among the league’s most active clubs during the summer, securing several marquee arrivals – including Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho, Jorrel Hato, and Liam Delap – alongside pre-arranged signings such as Estevao, Kendry Paez, Mamadou Sarr, and Dario Essugo.

All signs, therefore, point to the Blues being big spenders once again in the winter, though recent reports suggest otherwise.

Chelsea unlikely to spend big in January

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are not planning a major spending spree this winter and will instead prioritize offloading players.

Following Levi Colwill’s season-long injury, Enzo Maresca’s previous request for a new center-back was left unfulfilled in the summer, and indications are that the situation will remain unchanged come January.

While Chelsea have faced short-term issues in defense, the club’s hierarchy reportedly believes that depth in the position will soon stabilize.

Trevoh Chalobah has served his suspension, while the injury-ridden Wesley Fofana has returned to training after recovering from a concussion.

Tosin Adarabioyo is also expected to be available following the international break, and is set to fill in for Colwill, who remains sidelined with a long-term ACL injury.

Youngster Jorrel Hato is also capable of stepping into central defense, alongside Benoit Badiashile and Josh Acheampong, both of whom suffered minor knocks in the Blues’ recent dramatic win over Liverpool.

With additional prospects like Mamadou Sarr and Aaran Anselmino developing on loan, Chelsea believe they are well-stocked for the future and will want to avoid any hasty and unnecessary purchases.

Similarly, despite ongoing scrutiny of their goalkeeping department, there are no immediate plans to make a change between the posts, Sky Sports indicated.

Confidence remains in both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, while 20-year-old Mike Penders has impressed on loan at Strasbourg and is viewed as a long-term option.

Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, and Tyrique George are reportedly among those that the Blues would be looking to offload in January.
