Chelsea’s squad have decided to donate a portion of their FIFA Club World Cup bonuses to the family of late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

The Premier League side secured the Club World Cup in July 2025, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Chelsea earned an estimated $114.6 million (£84.4m) for winning the tournament.

From their FIFA Club World Cup triumph, Chelsea allocated $15.5 million (£11.4m) as a player bonus fund. After discussions between players and club officials, a single portion of roughly $500,000 (£420,000) will be donated to the family of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.

The brothers tragically died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, on July 3, 2025, just ten days before Chelsea lifted the Club World Cup. Reports indicate the crash involved a Lamborghini that caught fire, claiming both lives.

Jota had been a key figure at Liverpool, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020. His brother Andre Silva played professionally for Portuguese side Penafiel.

What has Liverpool done in honour of Jota?

Liverpool has already announced several tributes, including retiring Jota’s No. 20 shirt at all levels, adding a ‘Forever 20’ emblem for players this season, and creating a grassroots programme in his name through the LFC Foundation.

A fan mosaic and a minute’s silence are planned for Liverpool’s first Premier League match of the 2025/26 season against Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday, August 16.

Chelsea’s gesture highlights the solidarity shown by footballers across clubs in support of a family touched by tragedy, ensuring Jota’s memory is honoured beyond the confines of his own team.
