Chelsea ace confirms completed contract extension discussions with club image

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella confirmed that he has agreed fresh terms with the Blues, though the club are yet to make an official announcement.

The 27-year-old defender starred in Chelsea’s emphatic 5-1 win away at West Ham on Friday (August 22), with speculation swirling pre-match that he had signed a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

Cucurella’s current contract is set to expire in 2028 and his renewal reflects his growing importance under Enzo Maresca and the BlueCo group, after a strong 2024/25 campaign saw him score seven goals and provide four assists across all competitions.

The Spaniard was key as Chelsea lifted both the FIFA Club World Cup and Conference League and secured a top-four Premier League finish.

What has Cucurella said?

Speaking to Spanish media following Chelsea’s win over the Hammers, Cucurella revealed his imminent new contract.

“Yes, it's done. We already did it,” he said.

“I'm very happy, the club gave me the confidence and I'm very happy to be here. Hopefully I will have a great year.”

He also played down talk of a Chelsea title push, suggesting that it is still early days in the season.

“It’s only the second game of the season. We drew the first one and all the people said we didn’t play well.

“Now we won and all the people say we need to fight for the trophy. We need to take it step by step, game by game.

“We need to continue in the way we finished last season. I think we have a good team, new players that bring a lot of energy, a lot of quality. Hopefully if we continue this way it could be a good season,” he continued.

The Spaniard praised the new energy in the squad, particularly 18-year-old Estevao Willian, who impressed after being drafted in late to replace the injured Cole Palmer.

“We have a big squad. All of us need to be important. Estevao had a good game, made an assist and we had five different goal-scorers.

“This shows we are ambitious and have a lot of quality and hopefully we can continue this way.

“Estevao showed he’s very mature, even though he’s very young. He thought he was going to be starting on the bench and then in five minutes he had to get ready.

“He needed to listen and learn the tactics and everything and he had an amazing game. He has a lot of quality and can improve a lot.”

Chelsea will look to build on the result as they continue their Premier League campaign, with a match against Fulham at Stamford Bridge coming up on Saturday (August 30).
