Barcelona’s teen sensation Lamine Yamal may have the world at his feet, but Robert Lewandowski has offered a dose of reality with a twist of experience.

The Polish striker, who knows a thing or two about being snubbed at the Ballon d’Or party, has warned Yamal not to get too caught up in the golden hype.

Yamal, just 17, has dazzled fans and defenders alike this season. With 18 goals and 21 assists in 55 matches, the winger hasn’t just turned heads — he’s made them spin.

His rise has placed him firmly in the Ballon d’Or conversation. Some fans already have his name engraved on the trophy. But Lewandowski, ever the seasoned campaigner, isn’t biting.

What Lewandowski said on Lamine Yamal's Ballon d'Or chances?

Lewandowski told Mundo Deportivo "He [Lamine Yamal] has a chance, of course, but there are other things that are very important about the Ballon d'Or. It depends on the rules they have this year. Every year, you have different rules. It depends on who they want and what the rules are this season."

It’s not just a warning; it’s coming from someone who lived it. Lewandowski was tipped to win in 2020, only to see the award scrapped.

In 2021, he finished second, leaving many to wonder if football’s golden ball sometimes bounces the wrong way.

“For me it would be nice if a Barcelona player won the Ballon d'Or, but in the end you're not sure what the important rules are this season,” he added.

Lewandowski, who first saw Yamal in training at 15, praised the teen’s maturity and talent. But he also noted that expectations can become heavier than a Champions League final.

The young winger will now be looking to focus on Spain’s Nations League clash against France. Rest may be on the cards next — and much needed.
