A former Aston Villa striker has expressed doubt over his old side adding Jadon Sancho to its ranks.

The 25-year-old joined Villa on loan for the season from Manchester United, on the final day of the summer transfer window.

The deadline day deal came as a late surprise and put an end to United's summer-long pursuit to offload the winger.

The Englishman recently turned down a permanent switch to AS Roma, while a potential move to Juventus earlier in the window broke down.

While United had preferred a permanent sale, Villa will at least cover 80 per cent of Sancho's wages, which exceed over £200,000-a-week. Also, United will receive a loan fee.

This transfer marks the third time that Sancho has been loaned out by his parent club. He spent the second half of the 2023/24 campaign at ex-club Borussia Dortmund, and was on loan at Chelsea last season.

Time will tell whether Sancho's move to the West Midlands proves to be a successful one, with former Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor admitting he needs to be convinced by the deal.

"You look at Sancho, I look at that as maybe a bit of a panic buy on the last day of the window," Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

"It didn't work for him really at Chelsea, no other club wanted to pay the wages he's on," he added.

Agbonlahor, who netted 87 goals for Villa, feels Sancho may turn out to be an inconsistent player for Unai Emery's side.

"Maybe you'll see Sancho have some games top class, some games not looking as interested as he should be."

Sancho is in line to make his debut for his new side away at Everton in the Premier League on September 13.
