Arsenal are closing in on a contract extension agreement with star centre-back William Saliba.

The France international has been locked in talks over a new deal at the Emirates Stadium since the start of 2025 with his current deal running until June 2027.

With Real Madrid reportedly making contact with his representatives over the summer, Arsenal have stepped up talks, with a huge breakthrough reached as per The Athletic's David Ornstein.

Saliba has been highlighted as a key target for the La Liga giants, but Xabi Alonso is now set to turn to free transfer options, with Marc Guehi and Ibrahima Konate on his radar.

As per the latest from Ornstein, Saliba has agreed terms to stay at the Emirates Stadium until the end of the 2029/30 campaign, following a key breakthrough earlier this summer.

The 24-year-old will join four new signings in tying himself to the club until June 2030 alongside Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke and Cristhian Mosquera.

Saliba's current annual salary is set to rise from around £10m to £12.5m as part of the new agreement.

Following his 2019 transfer to North London to St. Etienne, Saliba was loaned back to his former club for the 2019/20 campaign, and spent two seasons on loan at Nice and Marseille in the following years.

He finally joined Arsenal fully ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, after expressing his desire to make an impact at the club, with 139 appearances in four seasons with seven goals scored.

His deeper numbers at Arsenal underline his importance to Mikel Arteta's side as No.1 for pass completion in the Premier League last season on 93% alongside landing in the Top 10 for touches taken and % of dribblers tackled.
