Why did van Gerwen withdraw?

Van Gerwen decided to withdraw from his home tournament after announcing that he and his wife, who have been married for 11 years, are in the process of ending their relationship.

Van Gerwen recently played Night 16 of Premier League Darts a few days ago and was eliminated from play-off contention after losing to Nathan Aspinall.

There is a long stretch of European Tour events coming up over the next several weekends, so for now we shouldn't expect van Gerwen to compete while navigating this period in his life.

MVG already has a European Tour event title in 2025, so he doesn't have to compete in the immediate future to qualify for the European Championship at the end of the calendar year, having the security of a title already.
