On Thursday, New Zealand faced off against Sri Lanka in their final group stage match of the 2023 World Cup in Bengaluru.

Batting first, Sri Lankan opener Kusal Perera scored a belligerent 51, but lackes support from the other end which saw the Lankans end their first Powerplay on 74/5. They were then reduced to 113/8 and 128/9 before Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka dragged them to 171.

In reply, New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra set the tone before New Zealand finished off the chase in just 23.2 overs, effectively sealing their semifinal berth.

In the course of his fluent 42, Ravindra became the leading run-scorer in the tournament, overtaking South Africa's Quinton de Kock and India's Virat Kohli. He also broke a 27-year-old record of Sachin Tendulkar's.

As soon as Ravindra got off the mark on Thursday, he crossed Sachin Tendulkar's tally of 523 runs in the 1996 World Cup. This was a significant run, as it ensured Ravindra would now become the highest run-scorer at a single edition of the World Cup, aged 25 years or under.

His tally now stands at 565, with potentially two innings left to play.
