The big money available in the league means that players of all kinds, from established internationals to grassroots-level players looking to make it big can get a foot in the door at the top level. In addition to growing on its own, the IPL has also served as an inspiration for other countries to set up their own T20 leagues.

The IPL has the biggest prize purse of any major franchise league in the world, at over 5.6 million USD. The newly established SA20 league offered a total of 4 million USD in prize money. This is a significant increase from the prizes on offer in the now-defunct Mzansi Super League, thanks to the investment from IPL team owners.

While the IPL benefits from being the first major T20 league of its kind, its constant growth has also been thanks to the emergence of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as a significant force in world cricket. Earlier this month, financial statements revealed that the BCCI's net worth is currently Rs 18760 crore, 28 times higher than the next most valuable cricket board (Cricket Australia).
