Jacob Bethell has issued a clear statement of intent regarding his desire to break into England’s starting XI for the Ashes this winter.
The young batsman, who has been named in the 16-man squad to tour Australia, has dismissed suggestions of a direct rivalry with Ollie Pope for the crucial No. 3 batting position, insisting that his sole focus is on performance.
Bethell is hoping to convert his current momentum, which saw him score his maiden professional century last month, into a Test debut in the cauldron of the Ashes.
The 21-year-old's confidence is backed by influential figures, with former England captain Michael Atherton publicly stating his belief that Bethell will get the nod over Pope for the opening Test in Perth on November 21.

Dismissing the Ollie Pope rivalry and fuelling the fire
Addressing the public speculation via Sky Sports Cricket over the No. 3 position, Bethell insisted that the atmosphere in the camp remains positive.
“Me and Popey get on great, I wouldn’t really call it a rivalry, there’s a lot of talk of outside noise, but it doesn’t really filter into the camp,” Bethell stated.

Despite his unassuming nature, the batsman revealed that recent form has ignited his passion to perform on the biggest stage.
Bethell admitted that parts of his summer were inconsistent, but added, “From a personal point of view, I think I would have dreamed up a better season but there’s been performances I’ve been really happy with.
"That has lit a fire in me, and I’m looking to build on that.”

Michael Atherton backing and the dream of the Ashes
Jacob Bethell's belief is shared by influential voices in English cricket.
Michael Atherton, speaking on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, fuelled the selection debate by suggesting the decision to replace Ollie Pope with Harry Brook as vice-captain may signal a wider change in the batting order.
Atherton suggested he has "an instinct" that Bethell will walk out at No. 3 in Perth.
The young star, who made his maiden ODI century against South Africa in September, is clearly dreaming of featuring in the historic contest.
Bethell said playing in the Ashes would be a dream come true: “I remember watching [The Ashes] on TV and just seeing the sheer intensity of it all and being really driven towards it. It would be a dream come true to play in it.”
He concluded with a clear commitment: “If I get a chance, I will be looking to take it with both hands.”
