Pat McCormack burnished his world-level ambitions with a dominant ninth-round stoppage of Miguel Parra in Sunderland.

Backed by a vociferous hometown crowd, McCormack moved to 8-0 in a one-sided WBA welterweight eliminator, with Parra's corner deciding they had seen enough after their man sustained punishment in the penultimate round of the scheduled 10.

Parra (25-6-1) entered the bout on a three-fight winning streak and was ranked 12th by the WBA, but McCormack, in seventh spot, soon showed that approximation of the gulf in class was generous.

In the opening session, the former amateur standout's speed was to the fore and a left-hook, right-hand combination jolted Parra. Frequently, the Mexican looked unsteady under McCormack's crisp rights.

The only blot during the one-way action early on was McCormack sometimes straying low to earn a warning from the referee. In round six, he went noticeably south of the border to have a point taken off.

Nevertheless, it was punishing head shots drilling Parra into the ropes that were the enduring memory of the contest. He got through one such onslaught in round seven, but the shellacking in the ninth meant his team wisely opted to save their man for another day.

Rolly Romero is the current WBA champion at a time when the 147-pound division is in a state of flux. Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan will contest the vacant IBF crown in a highly anticipated all-Irish rematch on September 13.

Jaron 'Boots' Ennis and Vergil Ortiz stepping up to super welterweight means there is a fairly open field to crown the next king of the division. Now aged 30, McCormack knows the time is ripe to put himself into the conversation.
