Next Liverpool Manager Odds: Jurgen Klopp 33% likely to make stunning Anfield return image

The clamour for Jurgen Klopp to return as Liverpool manager continues to grow after another harrowing night for Arne Slot's Reds against PSV.

As the final whistle confirmed a 4-1 home defeat - which leaves them 13th in the Champions League table - Klopp was given a 33% chance of making a stunning return to the Anfield hotseat according to the betting odds.

Slot was already under huge pressure before the match after last weekend's 3-0 hammering at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool romped their way to their 20th English league title last season before a heavy summer of spending of around £400 million - including huge outlay on Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz - designed to help them compete on all four fronts.

However, the Reds have already been knocked out of the EFL Cup and their recent performances make it seem very difficult to imagine them going deep into the Champions League either.

It cannot and should not go unmentioned that the tragic death of Diogo Jota in the summer has also brought about a naturally unusual feeling at the club, as players and staff navigate the sudden mourning of a beloved figure at the club while also maintaining progress on the pitch.

Jurgen Klopp, a legendary figure on Merseyside after his long stint in charge of Liverpool which ended in 2024, is emerging as a genuine candidate to replace the man who replaced him at Anfield.

Who will be the next Liverpool manager?

Jurgen Klopp is the bookmakers' favourite to replace Arne Slot as Liverpool manager having been Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull since January. Klopp is 4/1 on BetVictor but a 2/1 chance (implied 33%) with other sportsbooks including Sky Bet.

The big mover in the market this week has been Xabi Alonso (in from 12/1 to 8/1) amid reports leading Real Madrid players including Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham have turned on the Spanish coach at the Bernabeu.

Klopp, who spent seven years in charge of Mainz and then seven years with Borussia Dortmund, appeared to have retired from football management when he left Liverpool in the summer of 2024.

With the Reds, the 58-year-old won a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two EFL Cups, the Community Shield, a UEFA Champions League trophy, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Two of the other leading contenders for the role are both employed in the Premier League at the moment with Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace supposedly competing alongside AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.

2022 UEFA Europa League winning coach Glasner is in charge of a Palace side that are the favourites to win this season's UEFA Europa Conference League after winning the Eagles' their first ever major honour last season with the FA Cup, before doubling their silverware tally with a penalty shootout victory against Liverpool in the Community Shield against Liverpool.

Iraola, formerly of La Liga minnows Rayo Vallecano, has transformed Bournemouth into one of the most impressive and entertaining teams to watch in the league. They will be expected to compete for European qualification once again after collapsing away from the top eight in the second-half of last season.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has also emerged as a surprise candidate, too, with growing rumours that a lot of Real Madrid's squad are unhappy with their manager, despite Los Blancos sitting above Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

Why might Arne Slot be sacked as Liverpool manager?

Having matched Jurgen Klopp’s league title victories in his first season as Liverpool boss, and then endured the terrible circumstances of the summer, it would seem fair that Slot is granted at least a season of mediocrity at Anfield.

However, Liverpool returned from the November international break with a performance against Forest that went even further below the depths of their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Tonight's 4-1 loss to PSV was arguably even worse.

Despite their heavy summer of spending, there is a fair argument that Liverpool’s squad is weaker than last season, with other key players beginning to decline such as Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

As Slot struggles to find consistent attacking cohesion and Liverpool continue to be exposed at the back, the congested schedule before Christmas and over the New Year could bring about his departure should things continue at their current rate.
