49ers head coach responds to suggestion of Brock Purdy being placed on injured reserve image

Injuries are continuing to mount for the San Francisco 49ers, who again look likely to be without their starting quarterback Brock Purdy for the Week 6 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 49ers improbably improved to 4-1 on the season last week with a thrilling overtime road win over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football, prevailing 26-23 despite a rash of injuries and the absence of Purdy.

Purdy is dealing with a turf toe injury that kept him out of Weeks 2 and 3. He made his return in Week 4 but missed out against the Rams after reporting soreness following an error-strewn display in a defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ahead of the meeting with the Buccaneers, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Purdy would not practice on Wednesday, leading to questions about whether the problem is serious enough for the quarterback to go on injured reserve.

"There hasn't been a thought of IR," Shanahan replied. "He's progressing."

Mac Jones looks set to start in Purdy's stead once again after a superb showing against the Rams, though he too is banged up after taking a lot of punishment in Los Angeles.

49ers' lengthy injury report

Jones was listed as limited on the injury report with a knee issue, but the signs are he will once more be minus two of the 49ers' top wide receivers after both Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ankle, rib) each missed practice after sitting out the Rams game.

All-Pro tight end George Kittle remains on injured reserve with a hamstring issue.

Rookie Alfred Collins, who forced a key fumble against the Rams on the San Francisco one-yard line in the fourth quarter, missed practice with a knee injury. His fellow defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos did not participate owing to knee and hamstring injuries.

Those injuries are of great concern to a 49ers team already missing their best defensive lineman in Nick Bosa, who tore his ACL in Week 3.

There was better news on defensive tackles Kalia Davis and Kevin Givens, however. Davis practiced with a club after undergoing surgery on a broken hand suffered against the Rams, while Givens returned to practice for the first time this season following a pectoral injury.
