女子は五輪代表巡る熾烈な戦い

Four athletes will compete for the women's division: Kaori Sakamoto, Mone Chiba, Rinka Watanabe, and Ami Nakai. This competition is designated as an "Olympic team selection event," and securing a top-two finish will significantly boost a skater's chances of qualifying for The Milan Cortina Olympics, which begin next February, with three spots available for both men and women.

日本スケート連盟の五輪代表選考基準では、
１）全日本選手権の優勝選手
２）全日本2位、3位の選手
３）GPファイナル出場選手の上位2人
という優先順になっている。全日本選手権では、ジュニアの島田麻央ら、五輪に出られない年代の選手が表彰台に上がることも有り得るため、今大会の順位が大きな意味を持つ。

GPファイナルとは

The Grand Prix Final in figure skating takes place every December. It's contested by skaters who qualified from the six GP events held worldwide throughout October and November (the NHK Trophy being the Japanese event), with the top six individuals or pairs in each category advancing. This competition represents the highest level of performance in the first half of the figure skating season, spanning from autumn to spring.
