Five-time world champion and the Indian chess legend Vishwanathan Anand is still going at 55. Anand is set to headline the Jerusalem Masters 2025 in Israel, ending a long hiatus for top-tier international tournaments in the country.

Arjun Erigaisi, the highest-ranked India, will also join the Indian grand master in the event, which is scheduled from November 30th to December 3rd. 

Vishwanathan Anand to headline the Jerusalem Masters 2025

Jerusalem Masters 2025 will mark an important step to normalcy for Israel, a region embroiled in significant political conflicts in recent years. 

The 4-day rapid tournament will consist of some of the biggest grand masters from across the globe. The list consists of Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi, former World Cup winner Peter Svidler, and Vladimir Fedoseev among the foreign field.

The event will consist of a total of 12 players and will also feature the FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky, alongside top Israeli Grandmasters such as Maxim Rodshtein, Ido Gorshtein, Yahli Sokolosky, and Avital Boruchovsky

Anand last featured in a major chess tournament in early October, where he appeared at the Clutch Chess in an exhibition event against Garry Kasparov and will now be seen in action in the Jerusalem Masters 2025. 

With the new generation of Indian players, including reigning world champion D Gukesh, Anand has taken a backseat from top-tier competition and is juggling multiple roles of mentor, coach, commentator and administrator.

When and where is the Jerusalem Masters 2025 taking place?

The Jerusalem Masters will take place in Israel.

The event will commence on Sunday, November 30, and will run through Wednesday, December 3, and include some of the biggest stars from across the world. 

It will be followed by an Open event, which is expected to draw nearly 500 players, including some of the Indian players such as GM Prraneeth Vuppala, IM Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad, IM N B Hari Madhavan, IM A Ra Harikrishnan, and IM AL Muthaiah.
