The halt of a week in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League meant the schedule had to be extended for a week as teams head to the playoffs of the season.

The very first match between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders, as the league returned on May 17, had to be abandoned due to constant rain.

The final that was to be played on May 25, as per the original schedule, will now be played on June 3 after the schedule was revised.

Why did the BCCI add 60 minutes extra time to the stipulated playing time?

With the playoffs approaching, the board does not want the rain to end the matches without results and avoid cutting them short, citing the monsoon approaching as per their communique.

"Previously, the match playing conditions stipulated that for league matches, a period of 60 minutes of extra time was available to commence the match in the event of a delay. In playoff matches, the time was extended to 120 minutes.

"In light of the current threat of rain and the revised schedule, the IPL Governing Council has decided that, effective May 20, 2025, all IPL matches (including league matches) will have a period of 120 minutes of extra time to commence the match," the BCCI said in an official statement.

They also stated Clause 13.7.3 which would allow them to modify the match playing conditions for the remaining 13 matches, including 4 playoffs, 2 of which will be played in Mullanpur and 2 in Ahmedabad.

"As you are aware, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has commenced after a brief hiatus. Due to the hiatus, the IPL will conclude on June 3, 2025. With the early onset of the monsoon and the extended IPL period, several matches are at risk of being affected by rain.

"Consequently, the IPL governing council has made adjustments to the match playing conditions. Accordingly, Clause 13.7.3 of the IPL Conditions stands suitably modified for IPL 2025 only," the BCCI statement added.

What was the previous rule?

Previously, only 60 minutes were added as extra time for a match to start in case of a rain delay. For a five-over game to happen, the match had to be started at either 7:56 pm (Day matches) or 10:56 (Night matches. Under the new rule, matches will be extended by one more hour.
