Chennai Super Kings are heading into a crucial rebuild after a disappointing IPL 2025 season where they finished at the bottom of the table for the first time in the tournament's history.
With players like Ravichandran Ashwin announcing retirement and other senior players expected to exit, the focus is firmly on who could spearhead their comeback in IPL 2026.

Among the many names being discussed, one overseas batter has caught attention thanks to a strong Caribbean campaign and a long-standing connection with a CSK favourite.
R Ashwin tips Tim Seifert as CSK's next overseas opener
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin suggested that New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert could be a great fit for Chennai.

Ashwin pointed out that CSK's history of backing experienced overseas openers - from Shane Watson to Brendon McCullum, makes Seifert a logical target if the franchise parts ways with either Devon Conway or Rachin Ravindra.
"I think CSK might go for Tim Seifert. He has the experience, he is an excellent fielder and a wicket-keeper as well. He has evolved his T20 game to a level," Ashwin said.
The 30-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season at the 2025 Caribbean Premier League where he smashed a 40-ball century: the joint-fastest in tournament history.
Ashwin highlighted Seifert's fearless batting - noting how he raced to his hundred with two sixes when he could have slowed down for a personal milestone.
"He has been batting selflessly, and I think he should be on the radar this year," Ashwin added.
Brendon McCullum's influence on Tim Seifert
Seifert's career has long been shaped by Brendon McCullum who first mentored him during his stint with Trinbago Knight Riders and later at Kolkata Knight Riders.
McCullum has previously praised Seifert's progress - even suggesting the wicketkeeper-batter was ahead of him at the same stage of his career. That connection and CSK's tradition of backing McCullum-inspired openers adds weight to Ashwin's belief that Seifert could find a place at Chepauk.
What it means for CSK's rebuild
If Chennai pursues Seifert, it would mark a continuation of their strategy of investing in proven white-ball performers. With their batting needing fresh energy after a poor 2025 campaign, a dynamic opener like Seifert could provide the spark.
Even if CSK decides otherwise, his CPL form and reputation under McCullum almost guarantee interest from other franchises at the 2026 auction.
