Most U.S. Open holes-in-one: Major record in reach as Matt Fitzpatrick gives 2023 field a third ace image

The reigning U.S. Open champion is getting in on the hole-in-one frenzy at Los Angeles Country Club.

During the second round of the 2023 U.S. Open, Matt Fitzpatrick became the third golfer to file an ace to his scorecard, dropping in a shot from 124 yards out on the 15th hole.

There had been a belief heading into the first modern major held at the Los Angeles Country Club that the 15th hole could provide some challenges to the field. The hole is a par-3 124-yard hole with little margin for error.

So far, the field has welcomed the challenge of the 15th hole with open arms and lighter scorecards. Midway through Friday's round, there had been three holes-in-one, 50 birdies, seven bogeys, one double bogey and one larger than a double bogey. Golfers have shot an average of 2.749 on the hole, one of six with a lower average than par.

Fitzpatrick's hole in one inched the 2023 U.S. Open closer to the record for the most holes-in-one in a single U.S. Open tournament — and the tournament is not yet halfway over. What is the record? Here's a look at the history of holes-in-one at the U.S. Open.

U.S. Open holes-in-one record

The U.S. Open rotates through courses, and some courses lend themselves better to scoring a hole in one. The Los Angeles Country Club is rapidly closing in on becoming the one with the most aces in a single U.S. Open.

Already with three, the 2023 U.S. Open field is just one shy of tying the record of four, scored back in 1989 at the Oak Hill Country Club on the sixth hole, which is 159 yards out.

The 2023 U.S. Open is tied with two other years for three holes-in-one. But what makes the other two a bit more interesting is that each hole-in-one for the other two courses came on different holes.

In 1982, Bill Brodell sunk a hole in one at the fifth hole (180 yards), Tom Weiskopf hit his on the seventh hole (120 yards) and Johnny Miller hit one on the 12th hole (205 yards). Then, in 2002, Andy Miller had his on the third hole (205 yards), Shigeki Maruyama had his at the 14 (161 yards) and Scott Hoch drilled the third ace at the 17th hole (207 yards).

With the three aces, the Los Angeles Country Club has already soared on the list of the most U.S. Open holes-in-one in course history. Pebble Beach Golf Links, which has hosted the U.S. Open six times, holds the record with eight. The Baltusrol Golf Club, which has hosted the second-most with seven, has six holes-in-one.

There have been a total of 51 aces hit during the history of the U.S. Open, according to the PGA, though records don't always have the exact round, hole or range of the shots.
