Matt Fitzpatrick is green with envy — and plain green.

The 2022 U.S. Open winner secured his first major championship at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. and he cashed a pretty nice check to go with it. Last year's event boasted the biggest purse in the tournament's history, with a total payout sitting at $17.5 million.

This year, Fitzpatrick and the rest of the the 156-player field teeing off at the Los Angeles Club get a shot at a bigger pool of money. The field gets a shot at a bigger, LIV-sized bite at the apple, as the U.S. Open is one of 11 traditional tour events that has a purse of $20 million.

Here's what to know about the purse at the 2023 U.S. Open, the prize money and the checks everyone is vying for in L.A.:

U.S. Open tournament purse 2023

On June 14, USGA president Mike Whan announced that the purse for the 2023 U.S. Open will sit at a total of $20 million.

That number surpasses the $17.5 million purse that the U.S. Open held in 2022, when Matt Fitzpatrick paced the field and won the tournament in Massachusetts.

The $20 million purse is the most of the three major tournaments already played in 2023: The Masters had a purse of $18 million, while the PGA Championship boasted a $17.5 million purse. The Open Championship purse is yet to be announced.

How much does the U.S. Open winner get?

The 2023 U.S. Open winner will take home a check of $3.6 million, which is a bit of a boost from the $3.15 million winner's check cashed by Matt Fitzpatrick in 2022.

The pay structure indicates that second place will take a $2.18 million check, while third place takes home a check of $1.38 million.
