Tottenham Hotspur faced a disheartening loss against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final on August 13.

After being tied 2-2 at the blow of the final whistle, the match went straight to a penalty shootout, where the French side bagged a 4-3 victory over Spurs.

This match marked to be Thomas Frank’s first competitive game after taking charge as Tottenham’s head coach following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou.

Despite missing out on his first opportunity to lead the North London squad to claim silverware, Frank heaped praise on his players’ efforts on the pitch against PSG.

What did Thomas Frank say about Tottenham’s UEFA Super Cup defeat?

Vitinha failed to convert the first penalty for PSG, giving Tottenham a headstart. However, Micky van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed the third and fourth shots for Spurs, respectively.

Speaking after the defeat, Frank mentioned being ‘very proud’ of his squad, who, according to the Danish manager, were ‘perfect’ for the majority of the match.

“Very, very proud of the players, the team, the club, the fans. I think the players gave everything against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best. I think for 75 to 80 minutes we were perfect, almost, giving nothing away,” as per The Guardian.

“It’s down to the smallest of margins, like the flip of a coin. I’d like to thank all the players who stepped up, were brave and took responsibility. It was a special operation. In medical terms the operation succeeded but the patient died, so not that good in the end. But we worked on a gameplan that was a little bit different and very close to succeeding.”

Frank further spoke about the positive aspects of Tottenham’s display against PSG and added,

“We showed that we can be adaptable and pragmatic, and we needed to be against a team like PSG. The way we wanted to defend, high pressure and low defending, was top, almost perfect, and also the set pieces were very good and dangerous.”

Tottenham are now set to kick off the 2025/26 Premier League season with their opening match against newly promoted side Burnley on August 16.
