Records are made to be broken, and with the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand ready to take flight, some all-time marks are sure to go down.

However, there are some that aren't ready to be toppled just yet.

The records for players with the most Women's World Cup appearances in both individual matches and tournaments are out of reach for anyone at this year's competition to eclipse. Still, there are active legends of the game hoping to see their names rise up the lists of those who have outlasted the rest.

The Sporting News brings you a list of players who have seen action in the most Women's World Cup tournaments and matches, many of whom lead the standings for not just the women's side, but the game as a whole.

Who has played in most Women's World Cup tournaments?

Brazil legend Formiga stands alone atop the women's game as the only player to play in seven Women's World cup tournaments. In fact, she's the only player to achieve such a feat across either the men's or women's game.

Japanese midfielder Homare Sawa is behind her with six World Cup appearances, also more than anyone on the men's side.

Behind them are a host of players who appeared in five World Cup tournaments, with four currently active and hoping to increase that tally by one here in 2023.

Who has played in the most Women's World Cup matches?

U.S. legend Kristine Lilly, who is the most-capped player in the history of international football, has played in the most Women's World Cup matches, seeing the field in 30 games across her five tournament appearances.

Lilly's 354 international caps are the most of any player in football on either the men's or women's side, so it tracks that she has the most in the World Cup as well.

The active players with the most World Cup appearances are Christine Sinclair of Canada and Cristiane of Brazil, with both hoping to add to their totals at the 2023 tournament this July.

Seven countries have qualified for all nine Women's World Cup tournaments: Brazil, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, Norway, Sweden, and United States.

USA have won the most Women's World Cup matches in the competition's history with 40, and they have played the most games (50).
