We have two teams meeting up in north London this week that are returning to the UEFA Champions League, having not qualified for the last couple of editions of the tournament.

Tottenham Hotspur finished 17th in the Premier League last season, but as UEFA Europa League winners they are back in the top-tier of European club football. Thomas Frank has enjoyed a bright start to his life as Spurs boss and they now welcome La Liga opposition.

Villarreal have re-asserted themselves as one of the strongest teams in Spain under the management of former Valencia boss Marcelino. The Yellow Submarine did, though, most recently suffer a 2-0 loss to a previously winless Atletico Madrid side at the Metropolitano in the capital city.

The Sporting News has all the latest odds, tips and predictions for this clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England this week.

Tottenham vs. Villarreal prediction

Tottenham have started the season well and what we have learned is that Frank will mix things up depending on their opponent, perhaps unlike his predecessor Ange Postecoglou.

However, this is a new thing for him, playing European football every few days, and the amount of tactical planning may therefore be hit. Villarreal are a good side, too.

Villarreal will therefore fancy themselves to have a go at Spurs, but the hosts, buoyant by the return of UEFA Champions League football, will be carried by a wave of emotion this week, too.

  • Tottenham are big outsiders to win the UEFA Champions League this season.
  • Thomas Frank could hand a debut to new signing Randal Kolo Muani, who was an unused substitute at the weekend.
  • Villarreal will believe that former Arsenal striker Nicolas Pepe can haunt the Gunners’ arch-rivals this week.

Tottenham vs. Villarreal lineups

Here's how we think these two sides this weekend. Thomas Frank has adjusted his lineup and system this season, but a classic 4-3-3 system as deployed against West Ham is expected. Villarreal will hope their new front two of Pepe and Georges Mikautadze cause issues for the Spurs back four.
