Manchester United’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield was more than just three points — it was a piece of history rewritten.
Under Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils not only silenced their fiercest rivals but also broke a record that had stood for 118 years.
United had last managed to beat the reigning league champions away from home in consecutive seasons back in 1907.
On Sunday, they finally did it again. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring early, Cody Gakpo briefly restored hope for Liverpool, but Harry Maguire’s late header sealed a famous win — and an even more famous milestone.
Amorim, who has been working quietly but effectively since arriving at Old Trafford, called it his “biggest win” so far.
“I think that was the biggest win in my time at Manchester United. It means a lot today but tomorrow it won’t mean a lot. It’s three points and it’s a good victory,” Amorim told Sky Sports News.

A record broken and message sent
The Portuguese boss became only the third manager in Premier League history to win both of his first two away matches against reigning champions — joining Manuel Pellegrini and Antonio Conte.
That’s not bad company for a man who’s been in England for less than a year.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. Liverpool hit the post twice, and United had to dig deep to hold off the champions’ late pressure. Amorim praised his players’ resilience, saying:
“We fought for every ball… the spirit was there and that is the most important thing. If you have the spirit, you can win any game.”
He also credited the supporters, calling the win “very special” because of the atmosphere at Anfield. “To see our fans singing during the game, in a moment that the biggest rival are champions, on their field and at their stadium, this win is all about our fans,” he said.
Man Utd's revival continues
United’s win lifted them into the top half of the Premier League table, now just three points behind Manchester City.
Former defender Gary Neville believes the team’s improvement is no fluke, saying United “should be pushing for a top-six finish” given the talent and extra rest from having no European fixtures.
With Maguire rising like a phoenix and Amorim steering calmly from the touchline, United fans might feel this season could finally be turning red again.
