Sunderland are continuing to strengthen ahead of the new season as the club is advancing in a pursuit of a defensive addition.

According to French reporter Fabrice Hawkins, Sunderland have struck a deal with Paris Saint Germain to sign defender Nordi Mukiele.

The player is now on his way to the North East of England to finalise the deal and will become the newly promoted Premier League club's 11th first-team signing this window.

Once Mukiele touches down in Sunderland, he will link-up with former Bayer Leverkusen teammate, Granit Xhaka, who joined Regis Le Bris' side this summer in a shock move.

Mukiele is the second defensive acquisition The Black Cats have made recently, as Omar Alderete joined earlier this week from Getafe for a fee of around £10m.

The deal to bring the 27-year-old from Paris to the Stadium of Light also looks to be of good value to last season's Championship play-off winners.

Sky Sports' Keith Downie has revealed that PSG have accepted an offer reaching £12m from Sunderland for Mukiele.

What to know about Sunderland's imminent signing?

Mukiele is a versatile defender that can operate as either a centre-back or right-back.

The Frenchman got snapped up by RB Leipzig in 2018 after spending the early part of his career in Ligue 1 with Laval and Montepellier. In his four years at Leipzig, he made over 100 appearances for the club and won the DFB-Pokal.

Mukiele made the move back to France in 2022 as he signed for PSG. However, injuries hampered his first season at the club and he struggled to break into the side after that.

The Frenchman was loaned out to Leverkusen last season, but the defender suffered more injury problems and would only make 15 league appearances.

He featured sporadically in the German side's Champions League campaign, where he scored a last-minute winner against Inter Milan in the league phase.

In Mukiele, Sunderland are getting an experienced defender who possesses strong organisational and leadership skills from featuring in Europe's top leagues and the Champions League.

This will be crucial for The Black Cats in the upcoming season as the team is likely to be on the back foot in most Premier League games.

A potential drawback with the signing is Mukiele's injury record, as he has not participated in more than 20 league games a season since playing for Leipzig.
