JUMP TO:

Pep Guardiola shoots for his first Carabao Cup final in five years as Manchester City travel to meet defending champions Newcastle United in the first leg of the semifinals of the competition on Tuesday.

While they have been wildly successful in recent years in the FA Cup, City have not made it to Wembley in this competition since their four-year run of titles from 2018 to 2021.

Newcastle are the holders of the EFL Cup, having won for the first time in club history last season. The Magpies have made the final in two of the last three years, also falling to Manchester United in 2023 at Wembley.

AllSportsPeople followed the Newcastle vs. Man City match live, providing score updates, commentary, and analysis.

Newcastle vs. Man City live updates, highlights from Carabao Cup

FULLTIME: Newcastle 0-2 Man City

That's the final whistle! Newcastle were up for the match but struggled to finish when the chances came, while Man City did not disappoint in front of goal.

Newcastle will have believed the game manageable with just the one-goal disadvantage after the first leg, but a 2-0 deficit will take some real work to turn around on the road.

90+8 min: GOAL! MAN CITY! WHAT A DECISIVE MOMENT! RAYAN CHERKI GIVES MAN CITY A CRITICAL TWO-GOAL LEAD!

A ridiculous back-heel feed for Rayan Ait-Nouri sets the Man City substitute on the run at full speed down the left, and he slides to cut the ball back for Cherki who buries the chances from the left side of goal.

90+2 min: Shortly into nine minutes of added time, Sandro Tonali is booked for a rugby tackle of Bernardo Silva. A moment of aggression from the Italian which surely wasn't required.

That's the eighth yellow card of the evening's affair. The ninth is then shown to a member of the Manchester City bench shortly after.

84th min: Chance, Newcastle! OH DEAR, NICK WOLTEMADE BLOWS A HUGE CHANCE!

Newcastle break through the middle and the German receives the ball inside the top of the penalty area, but instead of taking the wide-open chance with his first touch, he decides to settle the ball, and he's dispossessed! The goal was gaping but Woltemade wasn't decisive enough for the moment!

83rd min: Rico Lewis is booked for taking ages over a throw-in which gets the Newcastle fans riled up.

73rd min: A yellow card to Bernardo Silva for a clumsy challenge on Bruno Guimaraes, as the Newcastle midfielder goes flailing to the ground dramatically.

Shortly after, the favour is returned as Jeremy Doku is downed by Guimaraes who himself picks up a booking. That is Doku's last action, as he is immediately replaced by Rayan Cherki.

71st min: Chance, Newcastle! SANDRO TONALI FIRES JUST WIDE! With the ball bouncing free just atop the penalty area, the Newcastle substitute throws his laces through the ball and leathers it on the volley, blazing his effort just inches wide of the right post!

69th min: After the insanely long VAR review, Nick Woltemade jumps to his feet and readies to come on. Sandro Tonali and Anthony Elanga join him, as Eddie Howe makes a triple change.

Yoane Wissa, Jacob Ramsey, and Anthony Gordon are withdrawn.

63rd min: Chance, Man City! IT'S ANTOINE SEMENYO AGAIN, AND MAN CITY ARE TWO GOALS UP!

Straight after the restart from the City substitutions, City take a corner to the front of goal where Semenyo gets free of Yoane Wissa's grasp just enough to throw his leg backwards at the delivery, poking it inside the far post! What a crafty strike!!!

Well now, hang on a minute...there's a VAR review to check whether Erling Haaland was standing in an offside position right on the goal line while battling with a defender...

This is a ridiculous VAR review. Haaland is basically level with his defender, and they both have very little effect on the play in the end. The referees will argue that Haaland was maybe preventing Malik Thiaw from blocking Semenyo's effort, but come on...

After a RIDICULOUSLY long review which nobody is pleased with...THE REFEREE HEADS TO THE MONITOR! Stuart Atwell in the VAR studio has determined that Haaland is indeed onside, and so Chris Kavanagh now has to determine whether there was actually interference on the play.

The referee has a look and...NO GOAL!!! THEY'VE CHALKED IT OFF! What a joke! This is ridiculous!!!! VAR overstepping in a situation which nobody needed them to adjudicate! Newcastle have a reprieve!

60th min: A triple change starts the substitutions for Man City as Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, and Rico Lewis will all enter the match. Given the time of the swap and the recent change in game-state, this is likely a trio of pre-planned alterations.

Nico O'Reilly exits alongside Phil Foden and Matheus Nunes, two of whom have been booked.

53rd min: GOAL! MAN CITY! ANTOINE SEMENYO PUTS MANCHESTER CITY IN FRONT! Two goals in two games to begin his Man City career!

The move starts down the left with Jeremy Doku, and he fizzes a cross along the top of the six-yard box. It clips Bernardo Silva at the front post which doesn't change the trajectory of the ball but does just enough to put off the defenders, and it reaches Semenyo at the far post for the easy two-yard tap-in!

It's a bit of a sloppy goal, but Pep Guardiola won't mind one bit!

50th min: Chance, Newcastle! TWO CHANCES IN QUICK SUCCESSION BY THE HOME SIDE GO BEGGING!

After the referee plays a smart advantage in midfield, it allows Newcastle to break down the left. The ball is floated to a backpedaling Yoane Wissa at the far post, and he gets his head to the ball under significant defensive pressure, looping it towards the top-left corner, but James Trafford tracks backwards and makes a FANTASTIC scoop save! On the recycle, Bruno Guimaraes slams a shot off the woodwork!!

49th min: YIKES, good reaction by Nick Pope to prevent an own-goal, as a cross from deep clipped off the knee of Anthony Gordon and deflected towards the inside of the far post. Newcastle prevent disaster with good reflex goalkeeping.

2nd half kickoff: The ball is rolling again at St. James' Park for the second half! No changes at the break, but Pep Guardiola will surely be keen to make some alterations soon if things don't turn around for Man City in the attacking third.

HALFTIME: Newcastle 0-0 Man City

Newcastle avoid disaster just before the break as they defend a number of successive Man City corners, and the teams head into the dressing rooms with the score still unblemished.

It's been a pretty stifled affair overall, with more fouling than chances on goal. Chris Kavanagh was initially hesitant to rack up a yellow card count, but the players forced his hand, and he will surely be wary of further needle once the game restarts.

Newcastle were the better side as they looked to counter with venom, while Man City's possession-based attack was largely quiet. Erling Haaland had just seven touches across the first 45 minutes, and looked frustrated as it dragged on.

45th min: Already with so many players injured, Newcastle pick up another problem as Jacob Murphy has gone down feeling the back of his left hamstring. That's yet another injury for the Magpies to work around, this one coming just before halftime.

Harvey Barnes will enter in his place as Man City take a corner.

37th min: Another yellow card here, this time for an actual play on the ball as Matheus Nunes is booked for a foul on the left touchline after being beaten by Anthony Gordon.

31st min: There's a scuffle off the ball as Chris Kavanagh finally produces the first yellow cards of the match after Nico O'Reilly was wound up by Joelinton off the ball. Both players get cautions.

Kavanagh has to take control of this match, and a few more bookings could be on the way to put a lid back on things.

24th min: Eddie Howe made the decision to start Nick Pope in goal after Aaron Ramsdale had stood in net for all domestic cup matches this season to this point. That may have backfired, as Pope is down needing treatment on his right leg. He seems ok to continue, but this will be a worry for Newcastle moving forward...

23rd min: What goes around almost immediately comes around as Antoine Semenyo gets away with a yellow-card worthy late trip on Lewis Hall. Maybe Guardiola's protests did have an impact, even if not the way he originally intended.

This is getting quite chippy...

17th min: Pep Guardiola is fuming at the fourth official after Joelinton catches Phil Foden with a nasty late challenge. No yellow card was shown by Chris Kavanagh, and Guardiola is incensed that there was no action taken there. He has a point.

15th min: A headed effort by Bruno Guimaraes flashes wide, but it was never a quality opportunity. Anthony Gordon's cross was blazed in at a vicious pace, and Guimaraes had to weave his body backwards away from goal to make contact. If that had been on target it would have been a truly impressive feat.

8th min: Man City come close to a shooting chance as a cross is fizzed along the goal mouth, with Nick Pope only getting a slight touch as the ball came across, but Erling Haaland can't get a touch!

4th min: Chance, Newcastle! YOANE WISSA WITH A HUGE MISS! A wonderful counter-attack sees Wissa in a central location receive the ball on a cross from the right, but from about 12 yards out, he fires the shot wide! There was pressure from a level defender, and the goalkeeper was there, but he had a lot of the goal to shoot at!

Newcastle may rue not taking early control of the scoreline!

Kickoff: They're under way on Tyneside!

Newcastle vs. Man City: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 mins to kickoff: Newcastle have been consistently lauded as having one of the best atmospheres not only in England, but in all of Europe. They'll need the St. James' Park crowd at their back again today to topple Pep Guardiola's machine! Kickoff is just around the corner...

30 mins to kickoff: Newcastle have had the worst luck when it comes to Cup draws this season. Most recently, they have been drawn away to Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating Bournemouth in the third round.

After facing Tottenham and Fulham in the Carabao Cup to reach this stage, they've been drawn to face five Premier League teams out of six Cup matches this season so far. Their only lower league opponent has been Bradford City who they beat 4-1 way back in the third round of the League Cup — that's insane!

And yet here they are, thus far enduring in both competitions.

45 mins to kickoff: Pep Guardiola reveals that Nico Gonzalez misses out today thanks to an "incredible knock" he picked up against Brighton in their last Premier League game. Thus, Nico O'Reilly will play in the No. 6 role, a position he has played briefly before.

1 hour to kickoff: Antoine Semenyo was a warrior for Bournemouth, logging 3,210 minutes in the Premier League last season across 37 appearances and playing the full 90 minutes in all of his 20 appearances for the Cherries this season.

Thus, it's no surprise that Pep Guardiola has turned to his new signing twice in four days less than a week after putting pen to paper on his Man City move.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: Lineups are in! Both teams rotate some, but not to the level you might have seen earlier in the Carabao Cup. Eddie Howe sticks with his starting goalkeeper Nick Pope, not even affording Aaron Ramsdale a game as backup.

For Guardiola, he rests Rodri and Rayan Cherki, but new signing Antoine Semenyo starts for the second straight game while Phil Foden and Erling Haaland are also deployed.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: With Newcastle currently struggling through an injury crisis at the back, and contemplating how to act in the January transfer window, locking down Sven Botman to a new contract was a key move for the Magpies.

Botman's contract was set to expire in the summer of 2027, meaning he would have been entering the final year of his deal this summer. Now, his new deal will take him through the summer of 2030.

2 hours to kickoff: Welcome to coverage of Newcastle vs. Man City from AllSportsPeople!

Antoine Semenyo picked up a goal and an assist in his debut against Exeter City in their 10-1 FA Cup thrashing last time out. Will he get another chance to shine today?
