OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu fired Manchester United to a rousing 2-0 derby victory over Manchester City as Michael Carrick's tenure got off to a dream start at a raucous Old Trafford.
Two winless games under caretaker boss Darren Fletcher, following Ruben Amorim's abrupt departure, sent United into this game at a low ebb, but they played with intensity and ambition throughout.
Harry Maguire headed a second-minute corner against the crossbar and the momentum continued from that point, with an abject City unable to get a foothold in the contest. This result, following three consecutive Premier League draws, should all-but end the title ambitions of Pep Guardiola's new-look side. Arsenal can go nine points clear with victory at Nottingham Forest later on Saturday.
One of those recent signings, Gianluigi Donnarumma, was the only reason United did not prevail by a more handsome margin. After a first half where Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes had goals ruled out for offside, the Italy goalkeeper brilliantly denied Dorgu before a double save from Amad and Casemiro that took the breath away.

MORE: Why are Man City signing Marc Guehi?
He was left with no chance when City left themselves exposed on the break in the 65th minute. Fernandes orchestrated the three-on-two break perfectly and slotted the pass to Mbeumo, who made no mistake on his return for Africa Cup of Nations Duty.
United's second was a moment to forget for two of the Mancunians in the City line-up. Nico O'Reilly was bypassed far too easily by fellow substitute Matheus Cunha and Dorgu caught Rico Lewis napping at the back post.
City might feel aggrieved, with some justification, that Diogo Dalot was only booked for an early studs-up challenge into the top of Jeremy Doku's shin. But aside from Donnarumma and centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, this was a derby - and probably a title race - that Guardiola's men allowed to pass them by.
United, by contrast, enjoyed towering displays from Casemiro and Fernandes and are up to fourth place. Carrick's brief is to secure Champions League football and this was a boisterous, not to mention unexpected, leap in the right direction.
Amad hit the post late on and substitute Mason Mount became the third player to have a goal ruled out for a VAR offside. It was a scoreline that massively flattered City in the end. Despite their hasty and expensive refit over the past 12 months, this is not a title-winning side by any stretch of the imagination.

Man United vs. Man City live updates, highlights, and commentary
Fulltime
Brilliant from United. Carrick is understandably delighted and laps up the acclaim. His team were fantastic. City were, given how much this fixture means to their club, an utterly abject disgrace. Potentially the worst of the Guardiola era, all things considered. Thanks very much for joining us.
90+4 mins: NO GOAL, OFFSIDE! Fear not, though, City are busy trying to concede another.
90+2 mins: GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Mason Mount!!!!!
Well City's determination to concede a third goal finally bears fruit. Massively exposed on the break, Cunha picks out Mount. Goodnight.
90 mins: Five mintues of stoppage time and it's party time at Old Trafford, in a way it rarely has been in this fixture.
89 mins: AMAD HITS THE POST! City exposed after throwing everyone forward and Amad is through. Beats Donnarumma but his the right upright.
80 mins: Triple change for City. Haaland off! Yikes. Silva and Doku also. Reijnders, Ait-Nouri and Mukasa all on. Casemiro, who has been magnificent, comes off for Ugarte.
76 mins: GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Patrick Dorgu!!!!
That should be that. Cunha scoots around O'Reilly to get the cross in and Lewis is caught napping by Dorgu, who finishes at the far post.

75 mins: A ponderous City move breaks down as Lewis loses the ball and is then booked for a foul on Dorgu.
71 mins: Mbeumo makes way to a standing ovation. Cunha on for the goalscorer.
70 mins: Cherki curls a free-kick into the box that's cleared behind. The corner causes minimal consternation.
68 mins: United continue to look by far the more threatening. Fernandes slots a pass to Amad, who might have been offside and drives wide in any case. City look bereft.
65 mins: GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Bryan Mbeumo!!!!!!!
United finally have the breakthrough. Cherki floats a fairly aimless free-kick into the box that Maguire gets up to head clear. Then United have three on two. Fernandes orhestrates things expertly, slotting pass to Mbeumo at the right moment and he slots past Donnarumma.
63 mins: Donnarumma again! Mbeumo the man denied this time. United could arguably be out of sight here. Thing you never thought you'd be typing today!
61 mins Some dicey play in their own half from United but Casemiro snaps in to make a final challenge on Haaland.
60 mins: Some calm possession for City before Lewis looks for a throughball that's never really on.
57 mins: Magnificent double-save from Donnarumma! Amad cuts inside and the Italy star tumbles to his left to keep it out. That's fine but his work to scramble and deny Casemiro on the follow-up is truly magnificent.
56 mins: Doku brings Dalot down on halfway. Yellow apiece? Nope. United look for Bruno, Donnarumma tidies up and the offside flag goes up. City's line has worked well today, although not much else has.
54 mins: Cherki starting to conduct City quite nicely. It's a United error that lets Haaland in, though, with Martinez deflecting the shot over the top. Silva's corner is straight into Lammens' gloves.
52 mins: More United pressure. Carrick's men have been really good. Khusanov with an important headed clearance.
48 mins: Not an ideal start for O'Reilly, who pulls back Amad and has to be booked.
Kickoff: 2nd Half
Double change for City at the break, with Alleyne and Foden hooked for O'Reilly and Cherki. That feels harsh on the youngster Alleyne, but Foden has been way off it, not for the first time recently. United right back into their work and Dalot fizzes a brilliant ball across the box that no one can finish.
Halftime
The players head inside and United will wonder how they're not winning. City have been error-strewn and well short of their best. Now then, Haaland is still on the field and getting treatment. He'll get absolutely pelters as he leaves past the Stretford End. One to keep an eye on.
45+2 mins: Rodri, who has struggled here, is booked for a lumbering challenge on Dorgu.
45 mins: Two minutes to be added on.
41 mins: Yeah, offside. Maybe more so than Amad was. Arsene Wenger would have had him onside, but he does unfortunately seem to have gone mad.
40 mins: GOOOOAAAA.... Hmmmm? Fernandes goes through on goal. The flank stays down. He rounds H, slots home. Flag down, bedlam at Old Trafford. Then the flag goes up.
39 mins: City settle into a more trademark spell of possession. Semenyo drives just wide of the far post.
36 mins: Doku has room to run at Dalot, who backs up. Curling cross that Lammens touches behind when he didn't really neeed to. City come the closest they have from the corner as Ake nods Foden's delivery back towards Alleyne and a combination of Lammens and Dalot keep it out of the corner.
33 mins: Amad rounds Donnarumma and sticks the ball in the net but he's flagged offside. It'll be checked but that looks fairly clear.
32 mins: Oh everyone, that's rubbish! Rodri gives away the ball on the edge of his own box, Fernandes slips a pass to Mbeumo but a combination of Alleyne and Khusanov stop him from scoring.
28 mins: Continuing to go end-to-end here, as Semenyo goes down for a rather soft penalty claim before Amad's cross to Mbeumo lacks the pace for him to do much with it. Mainoo treads on Rodri and City will try to lock into a little more possession.
25 mins: Doku, who is getting booed for having the temerity to get studded below the knee. Dalot slides in to concede the corner. Foden on it this time but the delivery is poor again.
23 mins: City settle into a nice bit of possession before Doku tries to slip Bernardo into the box and overhits the pass. Back come United, Shaw with the cross but it's meat and drink to Donnarumma. And Italians take that stuff very seriously.
22 mins: Good chance for United, who have men over, They'd have preferred it hadn't falled to Dorgu and Donarumma makes the save.
20 mins: Some pushing and shoving between Bernardo and Maguire. A few weight classes seperating those two.
18 mins: Dalot in a good position to make something happen but smashes the past far beyond Amad. We're not really operating at Best League In The World quality here.
17 mins: Shaw goes clattering into Rodri and joins Dalot in the book.
15 mins: Semenyo curls in a cross from the right and Silva heads over. Barely hald a chance but City's first attempt of any description.
13 mins: Amad now with a sloppy pass and Haaland has a chance to tear at the United defence, who scramble back effectively before Semenyo duffs it out for a goal kick.
11 mins: Dalot flies into a challenge on Doku. He gets maybe ia a bit of the ball but his studs get Doku blow the knee. That's nasty. A yellow and he feels slightly lucky it's not gone upstairs.
9 mins: Doku darts around Amad, who sticks to his task at the expense of a corner. Doku scuffs the set-piece all along the ground. Rubbish. City really have been wretched so far.
8 mins: Another turnover coughed up by City in their own half, Donnarumma mopping up again. There is a pattern to this game, just not the one anyone expected.
7 mins: United getting after a sleepy City here to the delight of the home crowd. Latest attack down the right results in a low cross cleared as far as Mainoom whose daisycutter is pouched by Donnarumma.
5 mins: City haven't settled and Ake shovels a bouncing ball vaguely in Doku's direction. Amad gives away a needless free-kick. But then Rodri plays a lax ball across halfway and Mbeumo is charging through! Donnarumma out to slide in and get there first. Yikes!
3 mins: Less assured from Khusanov there, who stretches to clear a Dorgu corner behind. In-swinger under the bar and Harry Maguire has hit the bar from about two yards! United should be ahead.
2 mins: Maguire booms a free-kick downfield for Mbeumo but Khusanov barges him out of the way and it's a goal kick.
Kickoff: 1st Half
Bernardo Silva gets the 198th Manchester derby underway. He's played in loads of them. United are playing a back four. Sorry, Ruben.
4 mins: The teams are out. It's derby day. It's loud. Let's get after it.
15 mins before kickoff: Warmups done. City depart to a chant about the veracity of their achievements and theres a giant 115 banner in the Stretford. All part of the derby day tapestry nowadays. City fans paying vocal tribute to the recently departed Ruben Amorim. What japes.
30 mins before kickoff: The teams are out going through their warm-ups. City run out second to a hail of boos. Rodri sprints out first before his teammates. It's been a long road back from injury for the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner and he'll have badly missed occasions like this.

45 mins before kickoff: Bernardo Silva captains City today, his 437 outing for the club. That takes him into their all-time top-10 appearance makers. The Portugal midfielder has scored three times on this ground as well.

1 hour before kickoff: Matheus Nunes is a surprise absentee from the City squad, meaning a start at right-back for Rico Lewis. Nathan Ake takes the other full-back position, while Rodri starts in front of the back four. Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku keep their places from midweek, meaning Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders will hope to make an impact off the bench.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in and there are a few eyebrows raised around the United lineup. Despite scoring three goals in his past two games, Benjamin Sesko is on the bench. It looks like Bryan Mbeumo will start at centre-forward, while Amad Diallo is also straight back in after AFCON duty. Patrick Dorgu starts on the left wing, with Matheus Cunha joining Sesko on the bench.
