Man City vs. Bournemouth final score: Premier League result, stats as Marmoush illuminates De Bruyne farewell

ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER —Omar Marmoush produced a goal fit for the occasion as Manchester City's fans bade farewell to Kevin De Bruyne during Tuesday's 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

Club great De Bruyne will leave City when his contract expires at the end of the season and produced flashes of the old magic to be regularly serenaded by his adoring public.

Spectacular long-range goals have been a key part of De Bruyne's repertoire in Manchester and Marmoush conjured one that the brilliant Belgian would be proud to call his own.

Bournemouth's defence took the collectively ill-advised step of standing off Marmoush, who took out the frustrations of having an FA Cup final penalty saved three days ago by smashing an unstoppable shot in off the post from almost 30 yards. It's a late goal-of-the-season contender. Unfortunately for De Bruyne, he arguable produced the miss of the season a few moments later when he hit the crossbar from five yards with the goal gaping.

Pep Guardiola's men headed into this game needing four points to make sure of UEFA Champions League qualification for next season. 

Getting three of them after Bernardo Silva and substitute Nico Gonzalez also got on the score sheet allows some margin for error at Fulham on the final day. 

City will play that game without Mateo Kovacic, who was sent off for bringing down Evanilson when through on goal in the 67th minute, although Lewis Cook made it 10 vs. 10 six minutes later when he leapt into an ugly challenge on Nico.

The Kovacic red card was brought about by an awful pass back towards his own goal by Josko Gvardiol and a similarly lax moment from the other City full-back, Matheus Nunes, allowed Bournemouth substitute Daniel Jebbison to net a last-gasp consolation.

Ballon d'Or winner Rodri returned from the bench to a standing ovation, nine months on from the ACL injury that blew a hole in City's season. They're up to third and almost out of the woods in the race for a Champions League place.

86 mins: Silva catches Kepa way out of his ground near halfway and the goalkeeper trips Marmoush as he seeks to pass him. Just a red this time, as Marmoush was way away from goal, but it's a risky one.

A fine half from City. Marmoush has probably scored their goal of the season, Silva with a typically tenacious second. De Bruyne has sparkled and also thrown in a comedy miss. Something for everyone! Bournemouth remain a live dog in this fight, as evidenced by Evanilson hitting the post, but it feels like Pep Guardiola's side have just taken a fairly sizeable step towards Champions League qualification.

45+1 mins: A promising Bournemouth attack ends with Kluivert getting his timing all wrong and slapping a volley into orbit.

44 mins: Kepa punches a De Bruyne free-kick clear and he does well to save when Gundogan fizzes one through the crowd. That wouldn't have counted because the offside flag was up against Haaland for blocking the keeper's line of sight. Which, I guess, makes it both a better and an inconsequential save.

39 mins: City turn over possession high up once again, Haaland into the box and he looks for a pass to De Bruyne that doesn't come off. He should have shot there and it's hard to imagine him doing anything else on any other night.

A well-earned goal for Silva, whose tenacious sliding tackle on Kerkez led to the Bournemouth left-back making a hash of his defensive work. The ball came back, Ilkay Gundogan scampered to the byline and found Silva to ram home at the near post.

35 mins: Ederson with a wretched clearance and Tavernier's shot is bravely blocked by Dias. It was a good first half hour from City but they've had a ropey few minutes here.

32 mins: Evanilson hits the post! The Brazilian could, maybe should, have his third goal against City this season. Tavernier gets into space down the City right and his cross is perfectly places, beyond Akanji, for Evanilson to slide against the upright.

30 mins: There's been a bit of a lull since that De Bruyne horror show, which has at least allowed for amusing images for his family in the stands and Rodri on the City bench being absolutely aghast.

25 mins: OH GOOD GRIEF, KEVIN, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE???? Marmoush leaves on on an absolute plate for De Bruyne, who from five yards out somehow hits the crossbar with his left foot. Dear, oh dear.

22 mins: Haaland tries one of his mad kung-fu volleys at the back post after De Bruyne digs out a cross from the left. It almost works.

20 mins: Marmoush now getting the "shooooot" treatment every time he gets the ball. Which is all fun and games, but the joke wears thin when you're doing it with a forward. 

14 mins: GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!! Omar Marmoush!!!!!

It's a glorious goal from the City forward. De Bruynesque, dare we say? Marmoush let fly from over 25 yards and the ball went in off the top of the left-hand post. Kepa won't like being beaten from there. He'll be even less pleased with the fact his defenders allowed Marmoush to merrily advance before unleashing that howitzer.

9 mins: De Bruyne sends Nunes into the box. He looks to chop inside past Kepa but the Bournemouth keeper gets a vital hand in.

7 mins: De Bruyne out to the pocket on the right wing to whip in his first cross of the night from Kevin De Bruyne country. Huijsen gets in a good defensive clearance. Kovacic loses his footing while shooting from the loose ball but that's not a bad effort, whistling just wide.

6 mins: Nice move by City and Marmoush slides Silva into the box. The only issue is the Egypt forward seemed to stand admiring his work and was not on hand for the cutback.

4 mins: Dias, not a man noted for on-field extravagence, tries an absurd, backheel volley that lets in Kluivert. He's driven wide and the shot is too close to Ederson.

2 mins: In comes a resulting long throw, which Ederson claims confidently.

20 mins before kickoff: Rodri joining the Manchester City subs is a welcome sight for the locals. The Ballon d'Or winner is in a matchday squad for the first time since suffering an ACL injury against Arsenal last September. The assortment of substitutes alongside him feels... odd. There's no space for Savinho in the squad, or FA Cup final debutant Claudio Echeverri. James McAtee and Rico Lewis are nowhere to be seen once again.

40 mins before kickoff: In tonight's matchday programme, Kevin De Bruyne picked his best XI from his time at City. He gave Erling Haaland the nod over Sergio Aguero at centre-forward, although you might not get to many supporters agreeing with that call right now. Haaland missed a penalty when City faced Bournemouth in the FA Cup quarterfinals. He went on to score the equaliser in an eventual 2-1 win before going down with an ankle injury shortly afterwards. Haaland returned from injury a couple of games ago, since when his team have not scored a goal and he passed up an FA Cup final penalty that Omar Marmoush had saved. With Champions League qualification up for grabs, it feels like time for Guardiola's superstar striker to step up.

If you're the sort of person who reads a football live blog you'll probably have as much fun as I had looking at the team for De Bruyne's full Premier League debut for City, his first start at the Etihad Stadium. Kevin De Bruyne's glittering 10-season stay at City will come to an end this week, unless he makes the unlikely call to play in the FIFA Club World Cup. What's sure is this will be his final appearance in the sky-blue shirt at the Etihad Stadium. Despite playing 90 minutes at Wembley on Saturday, the experienced playmaker starts alongside long-time City colleagues Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan

Mateo Kovacic was unable to join him in midfield at Wembley after Guardiola cryptically said the Croatia international did not feel "perfect", and it remains to be seen whether he will be available to return.

City have failed to score in 180 minutes since Erling Haaland returned to their starting XI, but the Norway superstar will almost certainly start in attack, probably supported by Omar Marmoush and Jeremy Doku. Phil Foden is likely to be on the bench once more as he continues to nurse an ankle ligament injury.

Justin Kluivert will likely come into the XI and enjoy a final chance to add to his superb tally of 10 Premier League goals away from home this season. First-choice striker Evanilson has five goals in his past five away league starts and two goals against City this term.

Dean Huijsen is expected to start in defence despite having signed a contract to join Real Madrid at the end of the season. Julian Araujo comes in at right-back, with Adam Smith ​​​​​​dropping to the bench.
