The Premier League returns from its first international break of the season and the showpiece clash of the weekend comes at the Etihad Stadium, with the Manchester Derby.

Manchester City started the season with an impressive 4-0 hammering of Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, before the fallibilities from last season showed once again with a 2-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur and then a 2-1 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium.

Manchester United showed signs of improvement over the summer in pre-season but it was a very tricky opening month for Ruben Amorim. A defeat to Arsenal and a draw with Fulham was followed by the humiliation of an EFL Cup penalty shootout loss to League Two Grimsby Town. They did most recently score a last-gasp winner against Burnley at Old Trafford.

The Sporting News has all the latest odds, tips and predictions for this clash at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

Man City vs. Man Utd prediction

Neither of these two sides have shown much fluency, but City just appear so easily rattled. United may have been comical already this year, but the performance level in the Premier League hasn’t been that bad and Amorim has shown may well have Pep Guardiola’s number, with two victories, for Sporting CP and United, in the space of a month last autumn.

Man City vs. Man Utd team news

  • Pep Guardiola is light on numbers for this Manchester Derby, with the latest attacking injury being that of former Olympique Lyonnais man Rayan Cherki.
  • Gianluigi Donnarumma joined just before the summer transfer deadline and the Italy international captain should get himself ahead of James Trafford.
  • Manchester United also have key issues in their squad as both Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount have injuries, leaving Joshua Zirkzee likely to start.
  • Andre Onana has now joined Trabzonspor and the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp is expected to see the Red Devils now have a Belgian number one.

Man City vs. Man Utd betting tips

It's back to square one for City, and while the return of Rodri is a huge boost, it's unrealistic to think he'll immediately hit the same heights after sitting out the last eight months.

City's attacking play has been let down by sloppy errors, and with their vulnerability to counters still a glaring issue, there's not much appeal in backing them heavily at short odds.

As for United, their own flaws remain, but they come into this derby with a bit of belief after grinding out a 3-2 win over Burnley before the break, giving them four points from three games.

The big plus for Ruben Amorim's side? They've actually had the upper hand in recent meetings, unbeaten in the last four against their rivals, which includes that famous 2-1 win at the Etihad last season and a gritty goalless draw at Old Trafford in April.

Given the form guide and the way these derbies usually unfold, Both Teams To Score and Man United Win looks the standout angle at around 5.88, a bet supported by both the numbers and the narrative.
