Lionel Messi continues his phenomenal form for Inter Miami, with the Argentinian scoring two goals in a 4-0 win against Atlanta United.

Messi was rested by Argentina, as Miami are preparing to play in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

The forward spent the week training with his national team, but played for Miami despite the lack of training with the club team.

Miami head coach Javier Mascherano commented on Messi's status, saying, "And I spoke to Leo to see if he could play. It was his decision, and clearly, he saw the opportunity that if he wasn't going to play against Venezuela yesterday, we could use him.

"Leo, of course, was ready to do it. He is a very special player, he's an icon, and even though he didn't train last week with us, we saw what he did today. He has helped us to win; he managed to score. That for him was important."

Messi's involvement in Miami's win was crucial in helping the forward make history again.

What MLS record did Messi break?

The Barcelona legend broke another MLS record with his two goals at the weekend, becoming the first MLS player to record nine multi-goal matches in a single season.

Messi delivered two goals in all of these performances, with five of the nine games coming consecutively.

Messi has scored 26 goals in 27 league appearances and contributed 18 assists.

He currently sits at the top of the MLS goalscorers with only one weekend remaining, as Los Angeles Football Club's Denis Bouanga has two fewer goals with 24.

Messi also contributed an assist for Miami, which has tied him with San Diego FC's Anders Dreyer for the league lead.
