England squad for 2026 World Cup qualifiers: Trent Alexander-Arnold out of Thomas Tuchel roster for September games image

Thomas Tuchel named his next England squad on Friday ahead of the upcoming September World Cup qualifiers.

The German has kept faith with some of the old guard from previous rosters, including Jordan Henderson, but there is no room for Trent Alexander-Arnold or Jack Grealish.

There are one or two newer faces in the group for the Three Lions' games against Andorra and Serbia next month. England will hope to continue their perfect record in Group K of the UEFA section, having won their first three games without conceding a goal.

England squad for 2026 World Cup qualifiers vs. Andorra, Serbia

Tuchel named a squad of around 24 players for the September qualifiers.

The big story saw Trent Alexander-Arnold omitted, the Real Madrid right-back having had a somewhat difficult early few weeks with the Spanish giants. Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton is in, as is Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, who has earned the chance for a senior debut.

One man hoping for a recall was Everton loanee Jack Grealish, who has started the season in positive fashion since leaving Manchester City, but he was not included. Marcus Rashford is in the squad, though.

The defence looks a little different, with John StonesMarc Guehi and Tino Livramento all called up and Djed Spence in line for a first senior England appearance. Levi Colwill is out with an ACL injury, and Trevoh Chalobah has been overlooked this time.

Ben White has reportedly told Tuchel he is available for selection again after years in a self-imposed exile from international football, but the Arsenal man is absent this time as he has a minor injury.

Jude Bellingham is not involved due to shoulder surgery, and Bukayo Saka is out with a muscle issue. Cole Palmer is also absent, having recently sustained an injury scare.

Why Trent Alexander-Arnold missed out on England squad

Tuchel explained that he wanted a smaller group for the September international break, which is why the likes of Grealish and Alexander-Arnold did not make the cut this time.

"We decided for a tighter, more competitive squad," he said. "There is no doubt I am a big fan of Trent and Jack Grealish. Big players and big personalities, always in the mix. I know both are desperate but in this camp we decided for Reece and Livramento and in Jack's [Grealish], Rashy and Ebs. The competition is up."

Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson "deserve" England call-up

Tuchel said both Wharton and Anderson had earned the right to be in the squad after impressive 2024/25 seasons for Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.

"We called both of them up because, first of all, we think both of them deserve it," he said. "They played roles in two very successful campaigns for their clubs in the last season.

"Adam was involved in major trophies for Crystal Palace and a regular starter in central midfield. Elliot was a key part of the campaign that led to Europe for Nottingham Forest. He is, for me, more of an eight and Adam more of a six, from his characteristics. Both of them deserve it.

"They had a good start to the season, they have full rhythm, and it's time for more competition, time for a bit of fresh blood, and that's why they deserve to be with us."

England World Cup qualifying match schedule
