Newcomers Brentford were one of the surprise packages of the 2021/22 Premier League season, easing to safety under the leadership of Danish manager Thomas Frank at their new Brentford Community Stadium home.

Having won promotion via the Championship playoffs, the Bees moved comfortably clear of the relegation zone with a terrific run of results in March and April, winning five games out of seven and losing only once.

Signing Christian Eriksen on a short-term contract at the end of January proved a masterstroke by Frank. The playmaker proved why he was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world before making his cautious return from a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020.

Eriksen is no longer at the club for 2022/23, having completed a move to join Erik ten Hag's revolution at Manchester United, and that will undoubtedly be a blow to their chances.

Can Brentford avoid 'second season syndrome'? When are Frank's side back in cup action? Here's what you need to know:

Brentford in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup

Brentford could have been forgiven for placing greater importance on league safety over cup runs in 2022/23, suffering a 4-1 defeat at Everton in the FA Cup fourth round. They will return to that competition in January.

A 2-0 defeat at home to Chelsea in the quarterfinals ended their Carabao Cup campaign in 2021/22, although they earned spectacular revenge for that setback by winning 4-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. Brentford will be back in the Carabao Cup in November.

Brentford Premier League betting odds

Brentford have not invested heavily and, having also lost Eriksen, are generally seen by the bookmakers as likely candidates for a relegation battle.

They will hope to once again defy those odds this season, with Frank already proving that he has the tactical nous to get the best out of his squad.

Brentford best & worst Premier League finish

Before winning promotion in 2021, Brentford had not been in the top flight of English football since 1947.

That gives them the novelty of being able to say that their finish of 13th in 2022/23 is their best and worst ever in the Premier League — and it is no slight to say that most clubs of their size would settle for that state of affairs in a division dominated by astonishingly wealthy rivals.
