Arsenal vs. Newcastle United final score: Premier League result, updates, stats as Rice stunner seals UCL place image

Declan Rice's sumptuous second-half goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 win over Newcastle United to make sure of UEFA Champions League football next season.

Mikel Arteta's side have also confirmed their place as runners-up in the Premier League for a third successive campaign, barring a wild final-week goal-difference swing in Manchester City's favour.

Third-place Newcastle posed plenty of questions during the opening stages and the hosts were indebted to a string of exceptional saves from David Raya, whose 13th clean sheet of the season puts him level with Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels at the top of the golden glove standings.

Raya was rightly named player of the match, but it was left to Rice, returning from the injury that ruled him out of last weekend's 2-2 draw at Liverpool, to be the match-winner. As was the case at Anfield, Arteta's side improved markedly after halftime.

Rice's season will be best remembered for his two spectacular free-kicks against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals, but this was another showreel moment from the England midfielder.

Arsenal turned over possession inside the Newcastle half and Rice whipped in a superb first-time finish from outside the box after being picked out by Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal vs. Newcastle live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

That's a wrap. Arsenal have qualified for the Champions League and barring two Manchester City wins and a daft goal difference swing, they will finish second once again. Newcastle looked a bit flat in that second half but still have their Champions League destiny in their own hands heading into the final weekend. Thanks for joining us.

90+6 mins: Pope up for a corner. Raya claims it. Now it's all kicking off. Lots of pushing and shoving.

90+1 mins: Pope bashes clear a Rice corner as we begin five minutes of stoppage time.

88 mins; Tierney coming on for Trossard as Arsenal look to see this one out.

83 mins: Newcastle substitute and former Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock twists and turns past White before blasting over. This one isn't done yet.

81 mins: Mikel Arteta boots a second ball onto the pitch and is booked. A yellow card for delaying the restart? How very Arsenal 2024/25.

79 mins: Free-kick in a dangerous position for Newcastle. Schar...into the wall

76 mins: Havertz makes his return from injury, getting a warm ovation from the Arsenal faithful as he replaces Saka.

75 mins: Newcastle enjoy their best moment of the second half has Osula and Guimaraes work the ball towards Barnes, who shoots off target under pressure.

69 mins: White allowed to advance and he fizzes a rasping strike across goal and just wide.

64 mins: Ha! within a minute of his introduction, Krafth is booked for clattering into Martinelli.

64 mins: Krafth, Miley and Osula on for Botman, Murphy and Wilson.

61 mins: There's a triple change incoming for Newcastle as Saka runs at their fading defence once more to give Pope further work.

59 mins: Arsenal have their tails up now. Saka cuts inside Burn and his shot is taken in the face by Botman.

55 minsGOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!! Declan Rice!!!!!

What a way to open the scoring. Arsenal snaffle possession inside the Newcastle half but there's still lots to do. And, boy, does Rice to it well, hitting a sumptuous first-time shot from Trossard's cutback across Pope and into the corner from 25 yards.

50 mins: A bit of pinball and a Saka header before Pope holds on.

49 mins: Lovely touch and turn from Lewis-Skelly before Schar blocks his shot for Arsenal's latest corner

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We're back underway and there's an Arsenal change, with Calafiori on for Saliba at centre-back.

Halftime

No stoppage time and a half that started at a lively pace remained goalless and got progressively less interesting. Let's hope that trend doesn't continue after the break.

43 mins: Half petering out a little here, although Arsenal have certainly quelled Newcastle's earlier enterprise.

36 mins: A flurry of Arsenal corners over recent minutes has amounted to very little. The sort of spell that makes you wonder whether Nicolas Jover wishes he'd made himself less visible.

31 mins: Now it's Saka's turn to spark Arsenal. He gets around the back and wins a corner. It doesn't amount to much but Trossard wins another.

28 mins: Rice, who has been largely bypassed by this contest, tries to make something happen for Arsenal, but his bouncing effort is easy work for Pope.

25 mins: As was the case when they faced Chelsea last week, Newcastle's 5-4-1/3-4-3 is causing Arsenal plenty of discomfort.

17 minsStop it David Raya! The Arsenal keeper makes a stunning reaction save to deny Dan Burn from a left-wing corner before keeping out the follow-up attempt with his boot.

16 mins: Both goalkeepers are excelling themselves here. Raya's poor distribution has a part to play in this chance, with Harvey Barnes allowed to approach the Arsenal box. His low left-footed strike is kept out of the bottom corner at full stretch.

14 minsPoint-blank save from Pope! Saka sends in a fantastic delivery to the near post that Partey meets. Fabulous work from the Newcastle goalkeeper to repel him. The next corner ends with a the ball breaking to Odegaard outside the box. The Arsenal skipper balloons his shot way over.

13 mins: Trossard gets his first chance to test Murphy defensively. It's not a great look for the Newcastle wing-back, who lunges in, leaving Trossard to breeze past Harvey Barnes and have a shot deflected behind.

11 mins; Another pleasing Newcastle move, this time from deep in their own half. Gordon finds Livramento, whose first-time shot is a little too close to Raya.

5 minsFantastic double save from Raya! Guimaraes looks sure to give Newcastle the lead as Arsenal are carved apart far too easily, but the Gunners' Godlen Glove-chasing keeper performs heroics.

Kickoff: 1st Half

After some running repairs for referee Simon Hooper with his tech, we're underway.

5 mins before kickoff: The teams are on the pitch. It briefly looked like we might not be starting on tip due to the gargantuan period of stoppage time at West Ham vs. Forest but we're good to go.

30 mins before kickoff: It will be interesting to gauge the mood at the Emirates today. They've had some unbelievable moments there this term, most notably those thumping and cathartic wins over Manchester City and Real Madrid. However, it would be understandable if the overall sweep of things leaves a tinge of disappointment.

1 hour before kickoff: The big news for Newcastle is that top scorer Alexander Isak misses out with a minor groin injury. It means experienced striker Callum Wilson makes just his second Premier League start of the season.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: Declan Rice has recovered from the injury that kept him out against Liverpool last weekend and starts for Arsenal, who have Kai Havertz back among the substitutes after his lengthy hamstring layoff.

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: Arsenal's focus understandably switched to the Champions League over the past month but they have only won one of their past six Premier League games, and that was against relegated Ipswich. If Mikel Arteta's side lose to a Newcastle side that has beaten them three times in as many attempts this season, they will slip down to third place.

Arsenal vs. Newcastle lineups, team news

Arsenal will be without Mikel Merino, who must serve a one-game ban after being sent off at Anfield for two yellow cards. Declan Rice has recovered from injury in time to take his place in midfield.

Kai Havertz returns to the matchday squad following his hamstring lay-off, but long-term absentees Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel and Takehiro Tomiyasu are out.

Leandro Trossard came through late tests on a hamstring issue. Jurrien Timber misses out, meaning a start at right-back for Ben White.

Arsenal lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Raya (GK) — White, Saliba, Kiwior, Lewis-Skelly — Odegaard, Partey, Rice — Saka, Trossard, Martinelli

Arsenal subs: Neto (GK), Tierney, Zinchenko, Jorginho, Havertz, Sterling, Calafiori, Henry-Francis, Nwaneri

There were fears that injury-plagued defender Sven Botman would miss the final two matches of Newcastle season but he starts as one of three centre-backs.

Eddie Howe is  without Joelinton, Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Lewis Hall, so his lineup at the Emirates may have a makeshift look about it.

The Magpies' 5-4-1 system proved highly effective against Chelsea last week and they appear to have stuck with that formation as they aim for precious points.

Newcastle lineup (5-4-1, right to left): Pope (GK) — Murphy, Schar, Botman, Burn, Livramento — Barnes, Guimaraes, Tonali, Gordon — Wilson

Newcastle subs: Dubravka (GK), Ruddy (GK), Lascelles, Krafth, Osula, Willock, Longstaff, Miley, Neave
